Hi- I am heading into the city next week and debating if I should drive or take the train. Thought I would ask your advice. I have never really driven in the city and the train would be easier, but would be first time with LO. She will be 16 weeks- if traveling by train would you baby wear or attempt to take stroller? TIA!
Re: Train or Car
As for car vs train, I think it depends how comfortable you are driving in the city. My DH's bff lives in the city and we usually drive because his place is only about 5 or 6 blocks off the highway and we can typically find street parking within a block so we're not deep into the city. We haven't done this with DS however. Also with a car if she is fussy, you can get in your car and leave as opposed to waiting for the next train.
If you are thinking of bringing a stroller check with the public transportation system website. Some only allow umbrella strollers and they must be folded up before boarding the train. since our LOs are too small for an umbrella stroller that wouldn't work and you don't want to be told you cant board with your stroller and then not have a backup carrier with you.
We went to downtown Dallas twice over the weekend and took the train both times. It was so, SO much easier than driving! The 45-minute one-way commute was a breeze and the train noise/movement put her right to sleep. I did nurse her once on the train, which was time-saving and easy too.
Once we were downtown, pushing her in the stroller was convenient. She sat in the infant part of the stroller while we ate lunch or stopped for drinks at local patios. Plus the stroller was awesome for holding jackets, shopping bags, etc. And I brought my K'Tan and wore her as we toured an art museum.
I kinda expected we might take a cab once we got downtown too, but never needed to. But if we would have taken a taxi, I would just collapse the stroller & buckle the infant carrier in the backseat of the cab. (This is how we got around NYC when my 7-year old sis was a baby.)
I'd always opt for public transportation in any instance.
