1st Trimester

1st Doctor's Appointment Late?

Hi Ladies, I found out I was expecting a week ago and am currently about six weeks. I called to make my first Doctor's appointment last week and it's not until Jan. 6th. At that point I'll be 11 weeks! This seems late to me? How do I know everything is going ok! We'd like to tell our families at Christmas but are a bit nervous not having been to the doctor yet. Should I call and try to push to have it sooner?

Re: 1st Doctor's Appointment Late?

  • Most OBs won't see new patients till 8-11 weeks along. The exception is when they have reason to believe you are high risk (history of losses, prior HR pregnancies, etc) or if you develop complications before that first visit. The first appointment usually consists of a medical history, urine test, and blood lab and is often done with a nurse.

I wouldn't push to have it sooner, I'm 6 weeks and don't see doc til Dec 30th. To be fair they offered as early as 8 weeks but with the holidays and DH work schedule the soonest we could do is the 30th. If you're not high-risk I see no reason to push to have it sooner, even if you would "like" to have it sooner. Maybe the holidays kind of pushed them back too so if they'd normally see you 9-10wks it's now 11.

Also, as for knowing it's all ok, trust that it's all ok unless you have reason to believe otherwise (spotting, etc) Stressing over worsts cases aren't good for you or baby.

As for what it'll entail ask. Since your'e going so late I assume you'll get more of what I am to get (the whole deal): Urine test, internal exam, hear heart beat, u/s, and blood panel. I meet with nurse then Doctor at this appointment. I can't see you going in at 11wks and not seeing a doctor til the next appointment like 4 wks later. But maybe it's just me.

  • That does seem awfully late.  You have to go with what you feel comfortable with...for me that would be enough for me to find a new practice.
On our way to baby#2!  Praying for a healthy and happy delivery next June!
  • Totally normal. Maybe a little later than some, but not by much. If I hadn't had the issues I've had, I'd be seen between 8-11 weeks. As long as you don't have any issues earlier than that, like cramping/bleeding, you should be fine to be seen then.

  • I had an early ultrasound because I was seeing an RE. Other than the u/s, they didn't really do anything with me. My first actual appointment with my own doctor wasn't until 10 weeks. Like PPs said, it's normal. I suspect yours is a little later because of their holiday schedule. Try not to stress about it.

  • My first appt for baby #2 is next Monday and I'll be 12 weeks... during my first pregnancy I saw my Dr for my first appt around 15 weeks.

If it makes u feel better, I was lurking on a different thread the other day and two women from Canada said its normal for them to be seen around 18 weeks for the first appt lol

Are you sure that wasn't the thread where we said that it's normal to see our OB that late (actually, it's later)? Because we certainly do see our GPs before then, at least in my part of Canada.

Edited to add that in Ontario, while you're not obligated to do it, all doctors must offer the option to do the Integrated Pregnancy Screening (bloodwork + NT scan) so you'd definitely be seeing someone in time to get that done.

  • Great thank you everyone! I have been in contact with my office because I've been having some pain that is one sided but they just let me know it's likely normal and to relax! Guess I'll just have to wait it out!
  • I think it varies depending on the doctor.  I was told most doctors in my city won't see you until 10 weeks, but when I called the doctor that I wanted, she said she sees you as soon as you get a positive pregnancy test.  I got all excited thinking I would get in early, but then the only date that would work with my schedule was actually the day before I turn 10 weeks!

I agree that it's nerve racking to wait.  I constantly feel my boobs throughout the day to make sure they are still sore! =) It's the only symptom that has been consistent for me.  The nausea comes and goes and I'm always tired, not sure if that's caffeine withdrawals or lack of sleep or pregnancy, so I'm going with the boob test.
