Calling All Curly-Q's

For those of you with natural curls, have you noticed a change in your curl during pregnancy? Mine are usually a pretty nice size curl (not too kinky or too loose), but I've been noticing since about August that the most-under layer of hair is straight now! At first it was just a little bit and I thought maybe it was because I got a new short cut or something, but now its back to being a couple inches past my shoulders and I'd say about half of it is stick-straight, with the top layer of hair being my usual curls. Talk about a weird look!!! :/ Anyone else out there a weirdo with me?! Or better yet, have some suggestions?

Re: Calling All Curly-Q's

  • My hair has always been very curly and I haven't noticed any changes yet. I have heard, however, that pregnancy can really change your hair. A friend of mine had very straight hair pre-pregnancy and then always had a wave after the baby. I'm secretly hoping mine will go pin straight. :)

  • I have really curly hair and haven't noticed any real changes. My hair does seem to get thicker while I'm pregnant, then I shed a lot afterward [which I know is pretty common]. I haven't noticed any changes in my actual curls with any of my pregnancies, though...maybe I'm just oblivious.

  • Yes, my naturally curly hair doesn't curl like it used to. The same thing happened when I was pregnant with my first. I've been flat ironing more often than not because I'm not a fan of the awkward waves I'm sporting now (partly wavy now with a lot of straight mixed in).

  • I have curly hair and the same thing happened to me. It's more wavy then curly. I've been twisting it into a bun while wet and taking it out the next morning. This makes the curls more pronounced and thicker :)

  • I'm experiencing some change in my natural curl too - much looser and the top is getting less curly than the bottom.

  • I have curly hair, but never wear it natural because it is a mess. However I gave noticed my mousy brown roots almost look black now, so they are going to be fun to colour next week!

This, down to the same texture, was exactly me with DS. It never went back to the curl afterward

  • Mine is still the same. The underneath, pregnant or not, has always been shorter, darker, and way kinkier/curlier than the rest. So far, no change.
  • This was a couple of months ago waiting on my son to get off the bus. The wind was blowing my hair crazy while I was letting it air dry. Still curls the same.
  • I have super curly hair and have not noticed any changes. Would love it if it straightened out though!

@LimeDrops, this makes me so sad. I hope that my curls come back, but I'm not holding my breath. :(
  • I have hair a lot like @peanutmuse except mine is shorter. I haven't noticed any looser curls, but I've noticed a lot more frizziness and need for extra moisture in my hair!

  • Mine is still curly! :( it's actually gotten harder to maintain, and I'm having to deep condition in the shower and use detangeler to get a brush through it, where before just washing it was enough to get the tangles out. It's a lot thicker too, which is surprising since it seems like half of it comes out each brushing.
  • Before DS I had wavy hair, absolutely loved in the summer. Scrunch in a little mousse let dry natural and big beautiful waves. During pregnancy they went away, it's been almost 3 years and they have not come back. The same look now takes 20 mins with a curling iron and just doesn't stay as well. On the upside sleek straight hair takes less than 3 mins with my flat iron, just have to run over the ends and my bangs:)
  • I haven't noticed much of a change with my hair other than the top losing its bounce midday regardless to the products I use. My sister is a hairdresser and when I was visiting home last month she cut, colored & highlighted my hair.  It was probably 6 months since I had gotten my hair done and when she was examining my hair, she said that all of my new growth had strands of light brown and dark brown hair. I  told her she was full of it and it's probably from the last time I got my hair done. She took a picture and showed me that the pregnancy changed my natural hair color. It's like free highlights! My hair has certainly gotten straighter. Before DS I had beautiful curly hair and when I was pregnant it got less curly / more wavy but not consistent all over. I can't just let it dry and wear it that way any more. This time, 3 years later its getting even more straight. Boo.

Same thing happened to my sister, although it worked out better for her. Her hair went from being crazy all over the place frizzy to a nice smooth but curly.

  • A friend of mine had pin straight hair before pregnancy for 26 years....now it's super naturally curly!

I was really hoping that would happen to me! Not so much... Same old straight hair.
  • My hair is naturally pretty curly, and has definitely relaxed since getting pregnant. It's still a curly mess in some parts, but others are straighter, others wavy. It's completely unmanagable, more frizzy, and I have a lot more grays.

  • My hair was nice and curly before DS, now it's barely curly. And it seems to have gotten straighter with this pregnancy. I miss my curls!
  • After 33 years of super straight hair, mine has turned curly with this pregnancy. The weird thing is that the back is really curly but the front is pretty straight still. I don't know how to fix it. I was always able to air dry my hair before and now I can't without it looking like a matted rats nest.

  • The only change I've noticed is that I don't need to wash it as often, it's like the oil production has slowed on my face and scalp. But curls are still the same (so far!!!).
  • I haven't noticed a change in the curl size. The only noticeable change aS that my hair is really dry. My stylist insists that is due to the fact that I'm having a boy. She thinks that moms expecting girls increase their oil production in face and hair but moms of boys are drained of oils. I have no idea but she lopped off two inches saying that it was just too dry.

  • I had ringlet curly hair before my first pregnancy. It dropped down to a curly/wavy tightness after that and has stayed steady through this pregnancy. I iron it almost all the time, now though. My hair has felt really dry during this pregnancy and it's easier to treat it when it's straight.

  • My hair has just been really dry and tangly, but I have noticed a change in ringlet size.

  • I've never had a 'nice' curl... it's always been curlier on one side than the other.. but I don't know if it's from years of straightening, my hair has just decided it hates me...
but since I've been done work I've been trying to leave it curly, and it seems to be holding it a little better. I also don't know how to style curly hair, no matter how hard I try.
