Tuesday went much differently than we planned! We went in for the induction at 6 AM, and they started the pitocin at 7:15. Everyone expected Nicholas to come flying out because of how quickly Emily was born. Yeah. Not so much. With the pit on board, the contractions went from 5 to 10 minutes to 2 to 3 minutes apart and were pretty painful, which was kicking my heart and blood pressure into high gear. It was recommended that I go ahead and get the epi at that time to reduce the stress on my system. The doc broke my water at 11:30ish because I was not progressing at all even though my contractions were getting stronger.
I labored for a few more hours, but things started to go a bit haywire. The epi was extremely spotty. I could feel everything from my hips to the top of my thighs...so basically everywhere you hope to be numb! I began running a fever and had chills, so I was given a tylenol suppository (fun times). Nicholas began to show some pretty severe decelerations from the stress. They turned the bed so that I was kind of upside down and put me on oxygen to try to help him. Luckily it worked and his heart rate bounced back, but then it was high. I was getting sicker and started vomiting. They did a check and found I was at a 9. The doc on call was getting concerned and was doing all he could to help me avoid a c/s. He pushed on the baby's head to allow more fluid to come out and hopefully help the baby come down more. Didn't work.
Eventually the doc had had enough. He decided to try to get me to push through that last centimeter. If I could get the baby to progress down, then he'd continue doing what he could to facilitate a vaginal birth. But if we couldn't get the baby out in 15 minutes, I was going back for a c/s. Apparently that was the motivation I needed!
It hurt like hell, but we made progress. The doc ended up using the forceps, and I got a 2nd degree tear, but Nicholas was born at 8:17pm! After some antibiotics for us both and an extra night in the hospital, we were both discharged today with clean bills of health.
I saw your questions on the other thread...DH finally decided on the middle name of Matrim (literally when the lady came by to fill out the birth certificate info). Emily met the baby Wednesday, and thought he was amazing. She immediately started kissing on him and tried to hold him. She still thinks he's pretty cool...she smiles at him and says "baby!"
And now, some pictures!!!
