Joint Birthday Invitation

We are doing a joint 1st birthday party for dd and my niece who was born 2 days before. We will each be inviting some friends who don't really know our dd. If we do an invite together, We wouldn't want them to feel like they need to buy them each a gift. If we do separate invites, we don't want them to feel awkward when they show up to a party for 2. What would be the appropriate thing to do in this situation?

    I personally would say no gifts at all on the invite. Some people are against it, but either no gifts or collecting something like books or diapers for a charity is very common around here.

    I would do separate invitations.  When "everyone" shows up only thinking it's for one child, then "everyone" will have only brought one gift and there is no reason for anyone to fele awkward.  And it makes it clear that you all - the hosts - REALLY were inviting them for your child, not the other.

    However, I would advise to not make this an annual tradition.  Specifically for this reason.  If you do it again next year - when people ask "oh- is it a joint party again"?, the expectation to buy two gifts will become the norm.

    I would only do a joint family party and do a separate friends party.

    Thanks ladies for the input. I think we are going with joint invites and just tell those friends don't get a gift for my niece. It will only be for this year. They live out of town and her dh will be gone for their dd's first birthday. We talked them into coming home since she will be alone.
