ST+Ms - Postpartum healing must haves

What did you use last time that was a life saver - or what do you wish you had that you will certainly use this time?

I know it's early, but I'm already starting to look around for more options for healing the bum area that the extra strength hydrocortisone cream didn't help with last time!  In things that did work - I used about 5 tubs of those tucks pads!  Loved those things!

  • I'm a FTM. What are the tuck pads? I agree, it's a great idea to be ready for postpartum recovery!

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.

They gave them to me in the hospital under some other name.  They're basically hemorrhoidal pads with witch hazel or "medicated cooling pads."  They didn't do a great job for me for the hemorrhoids, but they were nice relief for where I had stitches.  But I do like Miles2Go's idea above!

  • You can also get dermaplast spray for all the nooks and crannies. I like the frozen witch hazel pads also.

  • Make sure you take home extra "cooling pads" from the hospital. It's the pad that you would crack whatever was in the middle to make it extra cold. It felt soooo nice. And maybe an extra peri bottle.

  • I think they gave me something to numb the area with the stitches at the hospital but i don't remember. Definitely take the peri bottle, and i think i sent my husband out for colace on day 2.

  • I used exactly what they gave me in the hospital, minus the mesh panties: the ice pad, those witch hazel pads (in the fridge if you can) and the spray...Dermablast I think?
I also took home that little squirt bottle and it was fab.

  • Make sure you grab a ton of those netted undies from the hospital.  I loved them and when I ran out I wanted more :(  If you try to buy them, they are like 20 bucks for 2 pairs.  Grab them from the hospital.  Also make sure you leave with plently of those ice pack pads.  Awesome for hemroids and stiches.

  • I had a c/s and will now have a RCS. I loved grandma undies for the first week or so. Yes they are HUGE (up to the belly button). But they didn't rest on my scar, worked well with pads and I threw them out at the end.

Not flattering, but I will be buying another pack pre-birth.

Peri bottle, witch hazel pads, mesh undies. I hated the dermaplast and cold pads, they hurt more than nothing-possibly because they pushed into 3rd degree tear worth of stitches. I had regular long pads last time but plan to get the infinity this time-I just want something that won't push against that area.

Oh, and if you are going to CD, the peri bottle works great for water for cloth wipes when your done with it.

The mesh panties can be washed a few times before they start to fall apart! I loved them too! Also ditto on the ice pads, dermaplast spray, tucks pads, and epifoam!

We actually don't stock the panties anymore. We only give out 1 pair and it comes in the delivery pack the doc uses. So don't be mad if some hospitals stop giving them out. You can buy your own granny panties at the dollar store. For ice packs we turn diapers into ice packs, our patients love them. I had a c/s and I just used big granny underwear.

  • Csection recovery with complications and a must have for me was lots of yoga pants, I could decide where the band sat depending on my pain level. And loose tops.

  • Everyone mentioned good stuff. But I hated those mesh panties and I bled a ton for days - I found Depends were awesome. Buy them up a size, stuff them full of pads and ice packs and you don't need to worry about bleeding through anything!

Soft washcloths to tuck against my c-section incision to keep it dry and to keep my deflated belly from rubbing against it.

Yoga pants that provide a little bit of support to the pelvic area.

    Stool softeners.

I bled for 11 weeks PP (7 weeks just from having a baby; 4 more weeks from having an IUD inserted), and the Stayfree extra-long overnight ultrathin maxis were my favorite pad.

This is an okay list, but only if you have a vaginal birth. And the part about Tylenol being the only breastfeeding-approved pain reliever is complete bunk.

  • My midwife had me alternate between Tylenol and Ibuprofen while I had pain. DH had to run out to get one of them.

I really liked the depends plus a pad and something cold or witch hazel pad for the first week pp. The peri bottle is a must. It would have been nice to have one in every bathroom.

Something I didn't see mentioned is a couple of very soft nursing bras. The sort that sort of look like sports bras. You probably will have engorgement and anything with a cup will be painful.

OH waterproof mattress protector or TWO!!! The baby pees, you sweat, you bleed, the milk leaks, etc. I put a beach towel under the sheet on my side so the night sweats didn't feel so icky. Had DH change it during the couple of bad nights.

  • This list makes me thankful for my pretty easy recovery the first time (even with an episiotomy and 2nd degree tear) and scared for worse this time!

Other than more pads, I only needed what the hospital gave me--the tuck pads and dermaplast. I still have a bag in the closet of some of the massive pads they sent home that I didn't use and the cooling ones.
