Chicken pox!

Hi ladies, I don't post often but I need some advice. Or maybe comfort, or anything! My baby has chicken pox! He will be 6 months old on Monday. It started with just a dot on his forehead then I noticed one on his temple, then one on his hip area and then everywhere. I was able to get a Saturday appt today and confirmed that it is indeed chicken pox. I have no idea where it came from, he is not in daycare yet (he comes to work with me) but my daughter is in daycare. My best bet is that she was carrying the virus but since she has been vaccinated she did not exhibit any symptoms and she passed it on to him. So, long story but has anyone had a baby with chicken pox?? How did go? And tips to keep him comfortable? The dr said not to worry unless he spikes a fever or the sores get infected. It is hard not to freak out when I look at him though! Thanks so much for listening:-)

  • Aw! So scary! I hope it passes soon!

This reminds me that I need to get vaccinated. I never had chicken pox.

  • To help relieve the itchiness of it give him oatmeal baths. Tie some uncooked oatmeal in a foot of a pair of pantyhose and let the warm water run through it while filling his bath. Hope he gets to feeling better quick!

  • Poor baby! Sorry to hear this! No advice, just best wishes :(
  • Thanks ladies :-) i guess the good news is that it will be one less vaccine at 12 months. He seems to be acting pretty much normal, hopefully it continues that way.

My LO is just getting over chicken pox now.  His spots have all scabbed over.  I'm glad to hear your LO is doing pretty well.  I'm sure your doc told you, but besides the oatmeal in the bath they also recommend the water is only lukewarm.  I tried some Caladryl (doc said it was ok), but I'm not sure how much good it did.

I did learn that letting my LO sleep in the swing was the best thing for him.  I could get him to fall asleep by rocking our bouncing him in my arms, but once I would set him down the movement would agitate his itching. At least that is my best guess as to what was going on.  So getting him to go to sleep without holding him was key.

Mine never got a fever - I hope yours doesn't either.  Best wishes, and this will be over in a couple days. :)

ETA I did give him tylenol if he seemed upset and right before bed even without the fever.  I thought it may help with the itching, plus they can get spots in their mouths as well.

  • @SummerSnow11 thanks so much for your comments. It is so good to know that I don't have the only baby in the world with chicken pox! How long did it last for your little one? The first spots showed up for mine yesterday, and there are still more appearing tonight.

  • @Linz805
My LO did get his from daycare. I first noticed two spots last Saturday. Sunday he had a bunch, and there were a few more on Monday. After that I didn't really notice any new ones. By Thursday and Friday it seemed like they had all reached the crusted over phase. It went a little quicker than I thought it would.

So yeah, one less shot for our LOs. And we still put socks on his hands, but it was nice that he is not coordinated enough to scratch what itches on purpose. His little face looks so pathetic. Besides sleeping for naps and at night he seemed to be in decent spirits though.

    How's your LO doing now?

  • @SummerSnow11 he seems ok. He had a hard time settling down to sleep but he is sleeping now. His big sister can still make him crack up in under 5 seconds so that's a good sign :-) Per the dr I put calamine lotion on him so hopefully that keeps him comfortable. Thanks so, so much for your input and for asking how he's doing. Yay for Internet strangers, haha!
