How much cereal?

I know there was a thread about this not too long ago but I can't seem to find it and I'm just wondering how much cereal (and other foods) your LO's are eating. I know you start with like a tsp. at first...but then what do you increase to? what's the end goal?

I've been feeding G a tablespoon for a couple weeks now and I just got home from a friend's house who's baby is the same age. He ate 5 tablespoons. Oopsie.

Then when I start adding other foods do I decrease the cereal or keep giving the same amount + fruits and veggies??

LO has her 6 month apt. on Monday so I can ask the doctor but I'm just curious what others are doing!

Re: How much cereal?

  • I was actually just wondering the same thing.  I checked out both the Gerber and Earth's Best website, and it looks like after they accept it, increase to 4 tbspn per feeding 2x per day.  They also have good guidelines/meal plans for all solids.  I plan to talk to the pedi, too, next week.

  • We do 2 tablespoons mixed with 2 oz of formula in the morning. On most evenings we mix maybe 1-2 tablespoons in with the veggies he doesn't care for. Not always though. His pedi did tell us 2  tablespoons twice a day.

  • Oh crap. We've been doing 1tbsp oatmeal mixed with 1oz breastmilk, once a day. And a veggie once a day. I was wondering if this is enough. I'll definitely be asking her pedi but our appt isn't for two more weeks.

  • Remember gals.."food under one is just for fun". There is no set amount of food that your baby absolutely has to have at this age. BM/Formula should still make up a good portion of their daily intake.

While I agree that BM/formula is the most important for the first year...I don't think that food is "just for fun." According to my doctor and everything I've read, babies at 6 months of age (especially breastfed) need more iron.  If they don't start eating iron rich foods, they could have to take a supplement.

Yes, breastfed babies do sometimes end up needing a supplement, but that's no big deal in my eyes. Formula fed babies do not need supplementation as long as they are on iron fortified formula.

  • I will definitely be talking with our pedi more at LO's 6 month appointment, but for now, I'm not overly concerned with how much she is getting.

  • We started with oatmeal right after W turned 6 months and introduced sweet potatoes the week after. So far he isn't really into solids so I am celebrating every bite he keeps down. We'll be trying adding squash this week and I'm really hoping he'll like it. It would be great to try a food that doesn't cause him to clamp his jaw shut!

We do about 3tbsp fruit/veg/meat/fish combo for lunch and dinner.

She doesn't really seem keen on breakfast so I've been mixing cereal with fruit purée and she ate about 3tbsp of that today (usually it's only 1-2 teaspoons).

I just go by how much she will eat. Sometimes it's a tsp, sometimes 3tbsp. I feed her an hour after she's had a milk feed so she never really eats more than 3tbsp.

Edit: I make it as lumpy as she will tolerate to get her used to have pieces of food in her mouth whilst her gag reflex is still quite far forward.

  • I give B about 2 tbs of cereal mixed with a jar of fruit for breakfast, and 2 tbs of cereal with a jar of veggies for dinner.  He only recently started enjoying solids, so I am taking it slow. My pedi is fine with that.  I'm thinking of adding a fruit/veggie for lunch as well.

I try to feed him in between bottles, otherwise he won't drink as much formula.

  • I feed C 6 oz of formula then a 4 oz jar of purée, yogurt, or something like that. Most of the time he finishesit-- if he's still hungry after, we'll play with Cheerios, puffs, toast, etc. I kinda just feed him until he's done.
  • Like TradeMama, I just feed C till he's done. Sometime he will eat an entire Ellas pouch of veggies an hour after a bottle and sometimes he only wants a few bites.

  • I make his food with 2 oz formula or BM and then pour in cereal until it is a pudding/yogurt consistency. Then I add a little applesauce. For dinner it is two cubes of a veggie, 2 oz milk, and cereal to thicken it.

The dinner portion is a lot to me but he finishes it. It was definitely more than the size of his fist. So I hope if he was full he would tell me.

I agree. For 3 weeks we tried to be consistent about 3 meals a day along with his normal BM/formula feedings. I believe it helped my lil peanut gain a little over a pound in 3 weeks time. Dr was very happy!

  • I'm envious of you ladies that have babies that are good eaters.  I'm lucky if I can get 1/2 tbsp of cereal with 1tbsp of fruit or veggies into her twice a day.

  • Idk. I just dump a little into the bowl and mix some formula in with a little banana. She only eats part of it, maybe 2 tablespoons??? This is a total estimation. I feed her one other solid, a veggie at night. She will sometimes only eat half and other times the whole thing. I've been feeding her Gerber Naturals. I intended on making my own, but mama's gotta work. I'm just too tired to do it all.
  • when we did give LO cereal it was 2tbls of cereal and one ounce of BM.  He would sometimes eat almost all of it and then other times only eat a few bites.  Now I just give him what I'm having at meal times.  He LOVES food.  But that being said he will only eat as much as he wants and sometimes that's a lot and other times it's only a few bites.  He does eat the most at breakfast time.  I think that is because I will give him solids before I nurse him.

I'm not too concerned right now that he doesn't eat a lot each time.  He is still figuring it out and playing around.
