Dumb question

so DS has a really bad cold/cough. I know there isn't anything to do for it. took to the dr. yesterday and basically just doing what we have been doing....saline drops, bulb syringe, fluids, tylenol, elevating mattress, humidifier, etc.  My questions is how in the heck do they get rid of the stuff in their chest if they don't know how to spit it out????  I feel so bad....he will cough and cough and cough and then just swollow it.

Re: Dumb question

  • we have been going though this all week. We actually had to start breathing treatments because nothing helped. If it goes on too long I would go back and ask about this. It helped sooo much. But I think they did this for us because he started wheezing a little bit.

  • My Pedi told me to give my DS Benedryl at night to help w/ that congestion.  It works.  (3ml)  During the day/night if he gets really bad I go into our guest bathroom since it is small, turn on the shower to HOT HOT HOT, let it steam up the room and sit there for a while.  The hot moist air makes his lungs feel better....  DS has had this latest bout for a week already.  Hope you little one feels better soon!
  • thanks ladies. i just feel so badly for him.....he is sleeping horribly too. hope they allfeel better soon
  • We went through this about a month ago.  Eventually he did start spitting up the mucous and shortly after his symptoms improved.

I used no medications, humidifier or mattress elevation either.  They are tougher than we would like to think!
