Christmas/Holiday traditions

What Christmas/Holiday traditions do you have for your kids or want to start if this is your first kiddo?

I want to get Advent candles and do an Advent devotion each week as we light a new candle.

When I was little all of us kids would wake up on Christmas morning and crawl into my parents bed. We couldn't go do anything until we were all there and took a family picture in their bed. I'd love to do that with my family - I think it'd make a great timeline of pictures over the years.

We always went to a midnight service on Christmas Eve and I want to keep doing that with my family.

On one evening leading up to Christmas our immediate family would all get dressed up and my mom would cook a fancy meal. We'd use the china and crystal and we all felt so grown up. Then we'd exchange immediate family presents (Christmas morning was just Santa). I'm not sure how hubby will feel about that since he grew up exchanging all presents Christmas morning. But hopefully he'll be on board with the fancy dinner.

Re: Christmas/Holiday traditions

  • When I was little my grandma gave me an advent calendar with a little ornament in each section. I loved that! In think any advent-type thing would be fun to do. I saw on Pinterest someone wrapped 25 holiday books and the kids opened one each night. That sounds like it would be really fun to me!

  • We always had a few, the whole family went and picked out a tree and then decorated it the next night while drinking hot chocolate and eating Christmas cookies.

We 'helped' Mom make Christmas cookies - I am really looking forward to that one.

My Mom was a bit weird and also always did something on the solstice so I like to have a dark candle light evening and make a 'summer dinner' like burgers and corn on the cob.  Its weird but I loved it.

And on Christmas Eve night we always opened up one gift (usually pjs).

  • We always have my stepson on Christmas Eve so we do all the gifts with my family that evening as well as dinner. I'm interested to see what everyone says here as I'd love to start some fun things with DS.

One thing we do with my stepson that we will do with both boys is the last weekend that we have him before Christmas, I go through all his toys with him and we pack up everything he doesn't like or use anymore and donate it. You have to give in order to receive. He willingly donates at least half his old toys every year. It's awesome.

When I was young my family always did one gift and new jammies on Christmas Eve. We just vegged. I like the idea if a pkg with hot chocolate and popcorn, etc. Very cute! I also love decorating the tree while listening to Christmas music. Hopefully DS will enjoy it too as DH couldn't care less.
  • We alway went to candle lit service Christmas Eve then we would come home and open one gift. As a kid we were given a small random gift with my kids I want to do pjs. When I was younger my sisters and I always had a "sleep over" on Christmas Eve, we would switch off rooms every year. Some of our greatest memories together are from these sleep overs. I hope my kids do this :) Christmas morning Santa only brought one big unwrapped gift and our stockings. We did these first in the family room by the fire place then we would have breakfast and them move to the formal room where the tree was to open all the family gifts.
