Twin growth discordance at 34wks

I have been blessed with a very uneventful twin pregnancy, so perhaps this "freak out" comes from my first time having a scare with our boys.  At my 34 week OB appointment on Wednesday the sonogram measurements showed a 42% growth discordance between the twins.  Baby A is measuring at 4.7lbs and Baby B is measuring at 5.13lbs.  I have been having weekly BPPs done to ensure that the babies are healthy and they have passed every single one with flying colors.  Wednesday I was sent to the hospital for a non-stress test after the measurements showed the weight difference.  The larger baby passed within 15 minutes and the small one took almost 25 minutes, but he passed also.  The doctor is sending me back tomorrow for another NST to keep a close eye on Baby A.  Although I know that at 34w3d the boys would be okay if a delivery needed to happen, and that many MoMs have had significantly larger differences in weights of their multiples, I can't help but as a FTM to be nervous at the fear of the unknown.  Just curious if anyone else had a similar experience that they might be able to share.

Re: Twin growth discordance at 34wks

  • No experience bc this is my first twin pgcy. But, it will probably work out well. Drs are on top of things and you're right, you're far enough along now that should delivery be imminent, you'll all be ok. Prayers and good luck :)

  • I just delivered at 34 weeks exact with a super quick and easy vaginal delivery (induction) due to IUGR A was a pound heavier than B. Ultrasound said it was a bigger difference than what it actually was so those u/s estimations can be off. They both came out screaming and had a uneventful short stay in the NICU. The smaller one did much better than my bigger one and now 16 days after birth they are home and doing really well. I don't recall what the percentage difference was but it was a lot and once they came out my smaller one is slowly catching up.

  • @mellissalynay90-Thank you so much! Your comment eased my mind.  So glad that your little miracles are doing so well!
  • I just had weight discordance and was induced at 36 weeks 5 days. Both babies were born healthy and no Nicu time was required. They were 4lbs 15 oz and 5lbs 9 ozs. Good luck!
  • Are your twins mo/di or di/di? Either way, two things to keep in mind are that 1: weight measurements can be off this late in the game (mine also had a size discordance but they were estimated at nearly a pound under what they were when they were born) and 2: at 34+ weeks, you are in a really good spot, so if you are getting lots of monitoring and they needed to be born, everything will most likely be OK.

The day my mo/dis were measuring at 24% discordant (at 35w4) they ordered my C/S. Both babies were very healthy, and, like @mellissalynay90, my littler guy actually did slightly better (he breathed room air from the start....the nurses said something about having that little extra stress actually helped him....?)

Hope that helps a little....I know it is super nerve-wracking, but you've gotten to a really good place. Best of luck! :)

  • I am 27 weeks with mono/di boys and have been closely monitored since week 20 for size discordance. It goes up each growth ultrasound which is every other week. We are at 29.5% now and my mfm also told me that the smaller one will do better when born. I've been told that they will do c/s by 36 weeks since it is continuing to grow. Right now I'm a better incubater than NiCU. It's scary, but once I hit 34 weeks I will be thrilled! No steriod shot required after 34 weeks!
    Good luck!
