How do you working ladies do it??

I'm talking about working full time up until labor. Or even up to your due date. And sometimes after!?

My job is hardly physically demanding or very busy even. But as the weeks drag by and I just get more and more pregnant my symptoms get worse and worse and I feel crappier and crappier. Its getting more and more difficult to focus, let alone drag myself to work every day. Even just sitting here for 8 hours, if I were to do absolutely nothing, would soon be unbearable. I am exhausted, I hurt, have to throw up, and am constantly distracted by the next crappy symptom that comes up. Each week is progressively worse.

I will be 36 weeks on Monday and fully expect to make it to 42. I only have 6 weeks of leave I was saving for postpartum. I am seriously doubting my ability to last 6 more weeks at work getting worse and worse.

So I implore you ladies, how on earth do you do it?? Because I need all the tips I can get. Thank you so much.

  • I'm in your boat, but I own a business and end up being there 10-12 hours rather than just 8... It's hard... Very hard... And I'm only a week and a half ahead of you, and it just gets worse... We'll make it though.

  • I have no advice. I called it quits at 38w5d. It will hurt us financially (esp if I go over, ugh) but I just couldn't do it anymore. Car naps at lunch time helped a little bit, but not much.

You have to remember it is more demanding to work graveyard forr people who are not pregnant it is worse for people who are. As far as your time clock is concerned you should be sleeping right now...

  • Ugh I'm so sorry lady. At like 37 weeks I was so mentally and physically exhausted that last week of work was killing me. I can't imagine only getting 6 weeks off though. I'm taking anywhere from 14-16 depending on how I'm doing. I really feel for you :( your body needs rest.
    How ya feeling?

  • Thanks so much ladies. It helps hearing that I'm not the only one finding it extremely difficult, although all my sorries to you as well :( I'm gathering the courage to last at least a couple more weeks...

Somehow my body missed that memo. I get way more exhausted working day shift, which is hard to think about right now as I lose more energy with each day being pregnant. I have always been a night person. Always. It made school a nightmare, as well as anything else in life scheduled for the morning person.

  • Well 3rd time around working full time until 24hrs before labor pretty much we do what we have to. Although I'd be just as miserable at home so might as well be getting paid. As fr as life after it's 6 of one or a half dozen of another. It's hard but in different ways. I'm exhausted but it's what I gotta do.

  • I'm a dog groomer and worked until Wednesday (which ended up being super busy as a day before a holiday, AND everyone wanting to get in before I went on leave...). I was up by 2am Thursday with contractions am had her that night.
Some days were harder than others, but we do not have much of anything saved for my leave this time, and with holidays approaching, I wanted to stay as long as possible.

  • I was doing great until After working 50-60 hours for the first two weeks of the month. I'm 37.5 weeks now.our AVP is a mother and has been very supportive, telling me to take it easy, take breaks when I need to, asking how I'm feeling. Last week my boss (male) chastised me for fluxuating my start time between 8-9 although I always stayed late to complete my 40 hours and work through lunch. Then he saw i was getting upset- He said me starting at 9:30 would work better for the department anyway so why don't I do that. But this week Tuesday I felt better and came in at 9 and he started to chastise me again for coming 30 min early! said he needed consistency. I got angry and told him I can't give him consistency. im 9 months pregnant- my body doesn't work that way right now- I never know how I'm going to feel. Really?! I'm working 40+ hours, taking 15 mins for lunch at my desk. I'd really rather he just be grateful I'm busting my ass to be there full time right now! So over this!!

I was thinking of you after your contractions post @joshandpanda. I'm impressed you are back posting so quickly!
  • @kendalsheryl sorry about your picky boss! Though the benefits suck my job is usually fairly understanding. I will be 39 weeks +2 on Christmas though, and in healthcare we work that day. I would hate to call out last minute because I'm in labor and then there's no one to fill my shift! Though if I'm still pregnant (like I expect to be) I could really use the holiday pay. Grappling with the decision to request off at the moment.
  • I feel your pain...and I get NO PAID LEAVE. So, I will be working until the end, taking a week or 2 off then, working from home. :-(

No paid leave for me either. 6 weeks is all I can afford. :( sads

Mine is unpaid as well but I can't work from home... I'll be back within 4-6 weeks.

  • the last two weeks have been extremely difficult for me. im 39 weeks tomorrow. I work 36 hours and go to.college full.time. my hardest part is not telling our customers to go F themselves (I work in a grocery store)

just hang in there! you can do it :)
  • I worked until this past Wednesday-due Dec 9th. Was going to work til Dec 6th originally and just hit a wall of can't sleep, uncomfortable at my desk and I do home visits where there isn't always a place to sit comfortably, people smoke and are sick...hard to be a compassionate Social Worker when I am miserable! :) I give all working moms credit! I am not going back to work after st this point-going to take 8 or so months. Will be tough money wise but so many factors weighed in our decision.
Keep trucking-the end is close and the time you get with LO will be awesome!!

I worked up through my due date with DS1. The last few weeks were tough but I just pushed through it. This time around it is even worse because I can't go home and just crash. I have to take care of my three year old. I am taking the week off before my due date this time around. By then I will probably be a miserable bitch.
  • I taught up until this past Wed- 38w6d. I don't think I could have gone much longer. Being on my feet all day was killer.

  • I am planning to work up until my due date (Dec 20 ). I actually welcome work, it makes me focus on other things- I was working 60+ hrs a week, but now at 9 months keeping it to 40.
I just want all my leave time to be with the baby. Listen to your body and give yourself breaks when you need them- try not to nap at work, its too hard to recover and still be at work.
    good luck!
  • I have to work up until my schools Christmas holiday and I will be giving birth during the holiday if I go to my due date. I don't get paid leave so all I can afford unpaid is my 6 weeks. I could choose to take longer but we just can't afford it. I was ok up til here recently. I really wish I could stay home now though with the flu going around my school like a plague. I've had my shot but still not excited about working around sick adults and kiddos. I feel you!

  • I was planning to work straight to the end but last week I would be in so much pain at the end of the day. I work a desk job but I couldn't get comfortable in my chair and my thighs/pelvis would be killing me by the end of the day. Thankfully I requested to work from home until I have the baby and it was approved. I honestly don't know what I'd do if I didn't have that option. It's tough :/

  • I very much feel what you're going through.  I'm 36 weeks and it has just been getting harder and harder.  My due date is the 24th, my last of work is the 21st, my last to school is the 17th.  My leave is also unpaid and with my divorce even the 6 weeks is kind of pushing it, money wise.  I just keep trekking forward and time keeps passing.  School and work have been a good distraction and even though I'm over all of it, it does keep me busy and my mind off of things.  Our LO's will be here before we know it :)

  • I'm working up until the end too and I feel your pain- it's gonna be torture the last couple weeks. I take lots of water and bathroom breaks just to get up and walk around and break up the day a little.
  • I stopped work a few days ago at 37w . My job was physically demanding and required me being on my feet the whole time for 9 hrs a day. I was sure that I would be able to get to atleast 39weeks when I was 30weeks along but as the weeks went and I got bigger and heavier and fatigue consumed me I just couldn't do it anymore I spent more time on my arse on anything I could find to sit on I front of a fan then a soon as I got up I felt as though I had to sit back down again. I was not entitled to paid leave from work but am aloud up to a year off and able to sustain my job career. I am though eligible to recieve up to 16weeks paid maternity pay from the government and have organised my holiday pay and annual leave to be paid out to me which covers me until bub is born.

Claps to the women that have worked and trying to go all the way :)
  • I will work up until delivery and I taje call every other week. Getting woke up multiple times a night for call is the worst. I chew on ice all day to keep myself calm. Hang in there. ♡
  • The last few weeks have been rough. I had vacation this week and I want to cry knowing I have to go back to work on Monday. I'm 38w2d today and sitting for long periods is no longer comfortable. I'm still secretly hoping I have a baby this weekend so I don't have to go back. Otherwise I will work until 12/18 if baby isn't here yet. My new motto is to take it one day at a time.

  • My 34-35 week was bad, physically and mentally.  I don't know what changed but it got a little better and I was okay working until this past week, 39 weeks.  I only stopped because I couldn't stand all the questions and stares anymore.  So maybe in a week or so it will get better for you?  Who knows, this pregnancy thing is so unpredictable.  Fingers crossed though!

What really helped was that I said I couldn't wear my maternity clothes anymore and would have to resort to yoga pants and flats/tennis shoes (I was wearing maternity dress clothes and heels until 38 weeks).  People even commented that I was a whole new person ;).  Are you dressed comfortable, or able to be?  Maybe that could help...

  • I don't know! I'm working until my winter break starts (12/20) then I'm off until Jan 5 anyway. Due 12/31 so I hope I have LO sometime during that break. Some days are harder than others. I definitely come home and put my feet up to keep swelling to a minimum. And I just lie on the couch all evening after work. Counting down the work days (15) until I'm done!

  • My job is pretty physically demanding. P.E. Teacher and I try to sub during my prep to make extra money. It honestly keeps my mind off of my symptoms and makes the day fly by... I'm 36 weeks and plan on working until 39 because of how winter break and my due date land. You better believe I will be at the gym, working out my first day off! I'm dive being pregnant!
  • This next week is my last week and I'm tapping out at 39w2d. I prefer being at work to sitting at home it makes time pass faster and the days fly vs being at home bored, uncomfortable and not getting paid. I was going to stay on until I go into labor but my boss wasn't a fan of that idea (I'm a infant classroom teacher assistant). I'm on my feet all day then I go to my second job being an after school babysitter for a 4 year old boy. All in all my 11 hour days help time fly so I can see my own baby boy soon!!!
  • I worked up until I went into labor. I was having contractions that were becoming more intense and frequent the whole week prior, and I was walking around trying to bite my tongue about how much pain I was in each time they happened. I tend to put on the tough as nails face a lot, and really hate to "give in" to any discomfort. I have a high pain tolerance anyway, but the main reason I was staying at work is because I really love my job, and I work in reproductive and women's health. The environment itself is very nurturing so I was comfortable being pregnant at work. You have to do what is best for you, but I know different workplaces can make the situation much harder. Good luck to you!

I just use the baby as my motivation. I'm 39 weeks tomorrow and the thought of working this next week hurts, but my leave won't kick in until my doctor puts me out of work. He's encouraged me to work as long as I can and it has helped me keep my sanity. He has been pretty strict with me and told me to come straight home from work and rest in the evenings and the weekends though and that helps when I listen, but unfortunately I still have so much to do at home that I tend to not rest as much as I should.

Edited to add that I feel more sorry for the people who work with me because last week I was so grouchy. I can't imagine how awful I'll be this week!
  • I definitely feel your pain. I'm a restaurant manager and at 38 weeks I'm still working full time, on my feet allll day. What helps me most is eating small snacks through out the day and drinking plenty of water or gatorade. It helps me keep my energy up (as much as it can be up this far along) and keeps me from getting too cranky. Good luck, you're almost through!
  • I just take it a day at a time. At this point, after a few hours at work I am in a lot of pain from my hips and pelvis. I have to alternate sitting and standing because they're both really uncomfortable for long periods of time.

Basically I am just hoping LO comes a little early like her big sister did so I don't have to spend the entire month dealing with super annoying coworkers who like to point out that I am waddling or that "you're almost there!:" or "how ya doing?" in the most annoying tone of voice ever.  If I could take off now I would, but I know from experience that I will want those days to spend with the baby and adjust to the new normal of 2 kids.

  • Teaching has been rough since I'm on my feet all day. I have to take tons of breaks and luckily I have a great co-teacher with me that will be taking over while I'm on leave. Every week gets harder and harder. I'm dead after work and come home, lay down, and rest up. Having the week of for thanksgiving has been amazing!
