Parenting after a Loss

Birth Story: Long-ish (VeilSdeGTO)

Birth Story:

I had an appointment on Wed and the doc said it could still be a while since I was 1cm and 80% effaced. Scheduled my next appointment for Mon. Early Saturday, I had contractions off and on, some as close as 10 mins apart, but they would stop for a few hours and then pick back up. As I was getting ready to go to bed, the contractions picked back up and we waited to see if they would stop. They hung around for a bit but inconsistent. However, it was getting pretty late so we decided to call my MIL to come and watch DD.

I got to the hospital shortly after midnight and got hooked up. The nurse didn't think I was in labor and asked another nurse to rule out labor so that I could go home. (When I went to the hospital for DD#1, they also said I wasn't in labor and told me to go home. I had her later that day) When the nurse checked me, I was already at 4cm and she said she could feel the head. After a quick u/s, it was determined that DD was breech, so they admitted me. It was 12:40am early Sunday.

They called my OB to come in and gave me the option of having a c/s or try for a vaginal delivery. We weighed the pros and cons of each and decided to do a c/s. They scheduled it for 6am. When the doc got there, he said I could try to turn the baby and see if it works. If not, then proceed with the c/s. I got the epi, they tried to turn her, and it just wasn't working. She wasn't responding well to it at all so they prepped me for the c/s then. DD#2 was out at 3:41am, roughly 3 hours after I got to the hospital.

Recovery: It has been super rough being away from DD#1 and DH. However, I was well enough to go home on Tues. The pain has kicked in now that I'm just on painkillers. BF was really rough at first so we did have to supplement with formula. Now that my milk has come in, it is getting better. She sleeps all.day.long and wakes just long enough to eat. DD#1 is super sweet with her but not really that interested. Not being able to care for DD#1 is hard for me but DH has really stepped up. He is great with both girls.

I'm still trying to remember how to take care of a newborn but this one is very different from DD#1. I know it will take time to get into a groove but I feel like I'm just barely keeping my head above water at this point. I'm just trying to take it one day at a time and I'm petrified of Friday since DH will go back to work and I will be alone with both girls for the first time. However, we are all super in love with her!

  • Congrats again momma! I hear you on having to "remember" the newborn stuff after living in toddler land. And on having a different baby this time around (in my case thank goodness as G was so challenging). Hope your recovery goes smoothly. It is rough at first - try to take it as easy as possible!
