Gestational diabetes

Someone talk me off the ledge here. I failed my 1 hour twice and now I get to do the three hour test Monday. Yahoo. So tell me how it wasn't that bad, I won't throw up, and that even if I fail the test the diet isn't awful. Please, because dealing with this over the holidays sounds like a special kind of hell.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

Re: Gestational diabetes

  • The 3 hour test wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be. I thought I'd be a shakey, dizzy mess, but I wasn't. Truthfully, I didn't follow the diet as instructed very closely. They laid out exactly how many carbs I needed at exactly the time of day, but it was too difficult. I just ate low carb and my blood sugar was fine. I took it several times a day. Not that bad.

  • I have no advice about GD but I know a ton of people fail the 1 hour and then pass the 3 hour, myself included.  The drink was worse, no one told me that and I wish I was prepared for the nasty orange syrup I was about to drink.  I did feel worse during the 3 hour but it really wasn't horrible.  Take a snack for after the test and something to entertain yourself while you are there.  Good luck!

  • I've failed the 1 hour with DD and this DS. Passed the 3 hour with flying colors both times. Bring a snack to eat as soon as it's done.

  • I failed the one hour and passed the three hour no problem. I was told to just eat normally beforehand, and I think before the first test I just didn't eat enough. Try to follow whatever they tell you to do re eating as best you can. I didn't really mind the drink so much (to me it tastes like McDonald's orange drink - remember that stuff?) For me, the worst part about the three hour was not being bored. Funny, now that DS is here, what I wouldn't give for three hours straight with nothing to do but read! :))

  • Yes, the three hour sucks. It is not the worst thing ever though. You will be fine.

  • the bright side of GD is I didn't gain a crap ton of weight. and its not a hard diet if you eat any semi healthy to begin with. keep in mind I hate diets and struggle to follow them, but I found it easy to follow because it was about the health of the baby.

  • I know how much it stinks to have to do that.  For me, the 3 hour was more bearable than the 1 hour. I don't know why. I felt horrible, nauseous and hot during the 1 hour, thought I would pass out.  I had no problem during the 3 hour and the time went faster than I thought it would, too. Good luck!

  • I didn't think the 3 hour test was that bad...just a waste of a day.
The diet wasn't horrible.  With both pregnancies, I left the hospital at pre-pregnancy weight because I didn't gain much, thanks to the diet.  And it helped me make a few life-long diet changes (like I no longer drink juice, at all, when I used to all the time).  I wish I could stick to the diet for good, but without the 'need' to I can't, but it wasn't that hard for me when I had to.
What was the diet like? I feel like we already eat really well. It's kind of one of my "things" so I am quite irritated that it's not good enough. As for gaining weight, with dd I wasn't gaining enough so I'm pretty proud of the few pounds I've put on. Now, if this diet would firm up my post baby tummy, I'm a big fan....

I don't think because you failed the 1 hour it means your diet isn't good enough. If you eat really well, you might not have to make many changes at all, it just depends.  You didn't fail the 1 hour because of what you're eating now - they gave you a drink with a ton more sugar than you would normally consume in one sitting.

The diet is mainly about carb control at every meal and snack and balancing the carbs out with protein. Whereas without GD maybe you'd say "Oh I had a salad with grilled chicken for lunch so for dinner I'll just have a plate of mac 'n' cheese," with GD you have to balance every meal and snack, not just balance what you're having throughout the day...if that makes sense.

  • I did the 3 hour twice and thought it was the worst form of torture for a PG lady, ever.  I was instructed to do the test first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach.  I could drink water during the test, which I had about 32 oz with me to drink both times.  I had a container of nuts in the car the 2nd time because I remembered the feeling after the first time.  When I got done the first time, I didn't have a snack and would have killed someone for a burger.

On the bright side, 1) I passed both 3 hour tests.   AND the first time was after my first shower (which was an OOT one, which is why it was early), so I sat and wrote my thank you's.  I did it on the 4th of July morning, so the lab was totally empty.....  but the tech could only get blood from one arm, so all 5 draws were from my left arm with 2-3 pokes attempting in my right.  It was fun.
  • Thanks @auroraloo, I'm hopeful, but super annoyed I am dealing with this. It helps to hear others survived.

  • The suckiest part about the three hour test is the repeated blood draws.  I've posted this before, but they have to get blood out of my hands because my arm veins are deep, and I just about ran out of veins for them to use.

I found the diet to be fairly challenging because it had to be so perfectly balanced.  I've eaten low carb before and was happy doing that, but trying to get juuuust the right amount of carbs with each meal/snack was tough for me, and my numbers were all over the place even with the same meal two days in a row.  Then they put me on Glyburide, which worked a little TOO well, and I was getting fasting numbers in the low 60s and had a couple of hypoglycemic episodes, but my doctor blew that off because he was happy that my numbers were so low.  Bottom line, it sucked, but every individual has different issues with it and you may be fine.  Activity and exercise right after you eat helps your numbers too, but I was so giant and miserable that I couldn't exactly get up and jog around the block.

Good luck!  I hope you pass!
