Re: black Friday shopping

  • I'm OOT right now and went shopping with DH's aunt and cousins. It was pretty fun with a good group of shoppers!

I made out like a bandit at Kohls. On top of the sales, I had a 15% off coupon, a $10 shopping pass, and a $10 off a $30 purchase. I only paid $30 for stuff that should have cost me $100.

I didn't get as good a deal as I'd hoped at Target. I may take a few things back.

  • Just some jeans for dh for 9.50 and SD a huge pack of socks for $3. Both needed, but not worth bracing Walmart for. They were out of everything else by the time I got there. Heading to the mall tomorrow to check out Gymboree, crazy 8, old navy, and b&bw.

  • Got a 32" tv for $99 from walmart. Walked in on thanksgiving, no line, no hassle. Bought the feature tv for regular price and will get the Black Friday price adjustment with discover card.
  • I wish. I do it every year but I'm OOT. I'm still hoping to go to ON today, but all I really want or need is a little fleece jacket, leggings for C and a shirt for DH.

I usually go out, but not the last couple of years until l. I will probably go later to kick off Christmas shopping. I am hoping it is dead by then since the stores started opening at 5 pm. : /

Yes, it looks like Hell to me. The only way I'd go is if someone offered to pay me a ton of money.

  • I always go at like 9am. They still have some specials and many people have gone back home to finally go to bed. I like going at that hour because it's never still crazy by that time. My mom always comes along with me. We never buy much more than a Starbucks but we enjoy looking around. With that said, I have already done some shopping online this morning. They are not door busters but I was able to get some advertised black Friday prices online with free store pick up. I will pick up my items in a week. Can't beat that.

  • And a PP mentioned kid jeans for 9.50. TCP frequently has a 10 dollar den sale during the year. I guess I just will never be convinced that Black Friday deals are great.

Nope, they were men's jeans. And dh likes a very specific kind, and these were about $15 cheaper than usual. We got great parking and the lines weren't awful so it was worth it to me.

  • No I have never gone out and never will. I worked retail one year in college and that's the only time I have been in a store on Black Friday. It was awful.

  • I'm going out soon. I need to run to Target to see if they have the girls sparkly boots left.  My DD has been asking for 'em but they were $25 and she already has several pairs of boots and doesn't really need.  They're $10 today so I thought I'd run over and see if they have some left.  Also need to go to Bed Bath & Beyond and BJ's for a few things on sale.

Hoping because we're "late" it's not so bad out.  Also hoping the stuff isn't gone!

  • I didn't go out in because I am not seeing anything anything in store that I can't get online for the same price or even less when you figure in ebates.  I ordered a toy organizer for DD, a car toy for one of my nephews, a dvd, and a game for my other nephew, all for 50-70% off.  The deals on those things were definitely better than I have seen but not worth the crowds.

We need some stuff for the new house like new linens, throw pillows and some other misc. items and I have seen some pretty good deals on that kind of stuff so we may order that over the weekend.

  • Academy had some fishing gear my DH wanted for really cheap and I planned to go this morning! I got on the website yesterday morning to check what time they opened and the deals were live online! So I scored all I needed from the comfort of my bed! That was a win for me!
  • Count me among those who just do not think Black Friday deals are worth it.  The only great deals are for electronics, and we don't really buy those.

My DH goes out every year.  It is funny because he detests crowds and chaos, but still goes out every year.  I don't get it.

  • DH and his buddies went out, just like the last couple years. He got some DVDs and CDs, a stereo for his car for $30(!), a new pair of nice headphones, and he found a TV for my parents, which they had asked him to look for. And he got judged by my SIL because she was boycotting the stores that opened on Thanksgiving night. But she's also judging us for wanting to get a new artificial Christmas tree, so she's ridiculous to begin with. We are going Christmas tree shopping after L eats this morning.

  • I have gotten 80 emails this morning for online sales...I'll sit on my couch, eating leftovers and watching movies and save as much as most people. Problem solved.
  • Not a chance, not ever! The deals aren't really deals at all, the crowds are ridiculous and I'm angry at retailers opening on Thanksgiving Day for a lot of reasons. I hope those retailers have lower profits this holiday season in response so they'll stop this bullshit.

  • In 24 years, I never went and neither had DH but of course on DDs first Thanksgiving, we went. I had the kitchen cleaned up, was walking out the door to hunt, and DH is like I'll have us ready when you get back. Ughhhh aren't you the guy who said they would never go?? He got some shop vac that he can hook up to his new saw and we got DD a crap ton of toys for half off. I guess it was okay

See, that's just not a huge deal or bargain to me. Just a few months ago I spent 100 at Gymboree online. Everything was 13.99. I had a coupon on top of that. My bill should have been like 400. These Black Friday " deals" don't sound like anything great.

Exactly. I did the same at carters earlier this fall. Well, actually every time I shop at carters or gymboree b/c I never pay anywhere close to full price. Do people actually do that?!

I wasn't talking about clothing items. Everyone should know that if you wait a few weeks at Carter's, Gymboree, Crazy 8, etc it will all go 50% off or more.

Shrug. I know I got a heck of deal and it was worth it to me.

  • I'm going to Rite-Aid for a nail polish set for my step-niece (maybe I'll see you!) and Old Navy since everything is 50% off. I figured most of the crazies would be home by now. Did you go out, @supertoots? As we were driving home from my dad's last night, we saw people lining up at Staples. Totally crazy to me!
  • I just took the kids out because we are going to a parade tonight and they need coats now! It was a special kind of hell and no deal is worth that shit!
  • Went back out today and hit the mall and got SD a dressy coat at crazy 8 for $15, some really cute shoes there for $3, a sweater I've had my eye on for DS at Gymboree for $13 (regularly 32.95), and a few things at Old Navy for 50% off. ON was the only place with crazy lines. Definitely worth it, I'd say.

  • I went out. Honestly, the deals haven't been that great the last couple years and a lot of places mark their prices up so it seems like a bigger sale. I did get some stuff though.
  • We went to the mall this morning and it really wasn't bad! I wasn't planning on going shopping but then I saw a scarf that I had to buy for my niece at Aeropostale, so we decided to hit the mall this morning around 10. We didn't have any problems finding parking and the lines were less than 5 minutes long.

  • I went out with a girlfriend at about 6 this morning. It wasn't bad at all. The longest wait I had was at Joann's at the cutting counter.. But even then, not really because I took a number when I walked in. My receipt said I saved $101! I got got enough material to make 9 holiday pillowcases for the children's hospital, flannel to make DD a holiday sheet for her bed, material to make a girl and a boy cover for the carseat for LO, and some ornaments and cinnamon pine cones for $45. Our Carter's outlet was also a great deal. DD now has two new footie pjs, a sparkly sweater and some Christmas big girl underwear all for $25. Overall successful trip with a couple other stops, no crazy lines or people and girlfriend time with DD at home with DH. And now, I'm going to nap! :)

  • We weren't goign to go anywhere, but decided to go to Target this morning when the kids got up. It was pretty empty which is the only reason we went in.  H got a DVD for $6. I bought $100 worth of Christmas tree stuff.  I don't think any of it was a deal, but my tree needed it. I'm excited for the 20% off coupon I got though.  I'm going to use it on my groceries tomorrow.
Oo I got that online today. Looking forward to using it.
  • We went to the MOA today because we are crazy. We feel under the weather and wanted DD to play for a while and she loves legoland. I had a few mystery tickets to the amusement park so we ended up taking her on a couple kiddie rides for the first time and letting her play. Then we all came home and took a nap. Our BF deal was at Slumberland. I got a pair of chairs and three side tables, plus SIL gave me a coupon for 20% on item. It was super-sale priced, but it was good enough for me and the store wasn't a zoo.

Word. The news story I just watched said electronics are always cheaper the second week in December, than they are on Black Friday.
Yup, usually BF sales sound appealing enough to drag people in but if you hold out to closer to the holiday you'll get better deals on pretty much everything.

I go out on BF because it is tradition.  I haven't gone out at store opening for a few years now because it just isn't worth it to have to leave on Thanksgiving, there are no real deals.  I went to Kohls yesterday at 10 AM and there was still a line wrapped around the building to check out.  I checked prices on three different things while there and the sale price was the same as it was a week ago or higher.  Their Disney princess "barbie doll" was regularly $26 according to their sign and on sale for $13 (I got that same doll a couple of weeks ago for $13 at Target (regular price).  I picked up a watch that I had looked at there a week earlier and it was on sale for more than it was a week ago.  All in all I didn't find any real deals yesterday besides Gaps 50% off everything, which I could have gotten on-line had I not needed the kids' Christmas pjs for their Polar Express trip next weekend.  Add me to the list of people not impressed with the BF "deals."

I went out on Black Friday since we were OOT and all the women went while the guys stayed home with the kids. It was fun and the stores weren't any busier than a typical weekend afternoon. We didn't go on thanksgiving or 1am though--it was mid morning on Friday. I typically do go Black Friday shopping. If you time it right its not that crazy--I usually go around 7-8am which is typically when I do my shopping during the week and park by the door and never wait in line. If you try to go for the door buster deals that's when it's crazy.

  • we went out from 10:30-3 yesterday and the crowds were not bad at all.  I think because most people went out on thanksgiving night.  I took advantage of the 50% at Express and Old Navy and got my dad a gift for 1/2 off at loses (shop vac).  I'm looking forward to cyber monday :)

  • I went out about 9:30-2:30PM.  I didn't find anything too exciting but did purchase a Kindle Fire HD for DH.  :)
