Should I eat before induction?

Re: Should I eat before induction?

  • Definitely check with you doctor. Mine didnt want me eating within 12 hours because the delivery could result in a c-section and there's a risk of aspiration if you vomit.

  • Yup, check with your doc. I was given pitocin because I wasn't progressing and I definitely upchucked

  • I feel throw-uppy EVERY time with my sections. More like dry heaving since there's no food in my system. But it is the aspiration risk, I believe.

  • I would definitely eat before going in to be induced. But that's coming from my induction experience with DS. I ate breakfast early, and then went in for tests. We waited until lunch time for the results, so I was really hungry, but when they told me they wanted to induce right then, they wouldn't let me eat. I ended up having a 24 hour labor. I think it's absolutely ridiculous to expect a woman to work that hard all day with no food.

But as PP said, you should check with your doctor. If you already have an induction scheduled, your story is already much different from mine.

  • I was able to eat before my induction with DS and plan to do the same this time around.

  • They told me to go about my day as planned, which I assume they know includes eating.

  • Thanks ladies. On Tuesday fluid was low (6) and BP was high so I'm going in tomorrow at 9:45am to check both again. Dr said if either are off being sent to L&D for induction but didn't say anything about eating.
  • I am being induced in the morning and was told to eat a light breakfast...

    Good luck! @jagged1! x
  • I would eat. I didn't eat for 24 hours during my first labor - it was awful, I was so hungry. I didn't eat anything at home then they wouldn't let me in the hospital. So before leaving for the hospital when in labor with ds2, I ate a HUGE meal of homemade meatloaf, mashed potatoes, salad etc. You can bet I did some serious pooping on the table that time around!
  • It depends on the hospital and the doctor.  Some of my docs won't let you be induced if you've eaten within the last 4-8 hours.
  • Thankfully my baby boy came on his own, but I was scheduled for an induction on Tuesday 12/3 and was told to eat before going into the hospital. I would have gone into the hospital Monday night, so it would have been along time without food.

  • I went out to a great breakfast before my induction, midwifes orders.  They don't let you eat once admitted.
  • Yes! Yes! Yes! I wish I would have finished my McDonald's before I got to the hospital... They won't let you have another bite once you walk into that room! LOL. ...Might as well, seriously, because you probably won't be eating another bite for the next 9-12 hours.
