PSA: Convertible Crib conversion kits...

Ok... I've heard many conflicting information about Convertible Crib conversion kits/rails... The lady at BRU told us back in 2011 when we bought DS's crib (Baby Italia Eastside) that we would be able to use regular hook-in bed rails... which are cheaper then the $188 conversion kit that Baby Italia sells. Well I did a bit of research and I read a bunch of people saying that you couldn't use generic bed rails without drilling extra holes... Which I didn't want to do. So... DH being the cheapass he is... bought these anyway... $33.40 with free shipping... and he put the bed together yesterday with no issues at all! So DS will be getting a full bed for Christmas this year. So just FYI, as long as they are 'Hook-in bed rails' you can buy generic conversion kits for your crib. First look over the crib to see if they have the 'slots' for this... but I was pretty shocked and was budgeting for the $188 conversion kit from Baby Italia... DH had other plans... which yet again saved us a ton!

Re: PSA: Convertible Crib conversion kits...

  • Good to know! Thanks for the info!! We have been solely researching convertible cribs and were concerned that we'd have to not only pay through the nose for them, but also store the rails (for fear that the ones that went with the set would no longer be sold when we were ready for them).
  • Loading the player...
  • Just make sure you look to see if they have hooks in rails (slot hole). I was reading that Baby Cache (another high-end brand) from BRUs has bolts instead... which I would believe wouldn't be safe since children like to 'jump on beds'. I would feel more comfortable with a hook in rail crib...

  • I can see why you'd feel that way... And knowing my husband, our kids will probably be pretty rambunctious ;) so I should be considering that safety aspect... We've mainly been looking online and not BRU or anything "high end" but given this is our first go at it we might be doing the wrong thing...? Just don't want to spend an arm and a leg on it, but also don't want something flimsy that was freshly shipped from some other country that doesn't have the same safety standards... Ugh

Great. I think ours is a Baby Cache one.

  • Well double check. I'm not sure if this is fact... I was just reading that they use bolts instead of slots (hook in bed rails).

We just went last night to this link https://www.atgstores.com/products/view.aspx?sku=6803688 that you posted and ordered the same exact rails. WE ARE SUPER EXCITED! We have been looking high and low for the Babi Italia Eastside Bed Rail Conversion Kit. Everywhere we went it is OUT OF STOCK or close to $200.00 :(
We have spent a couple of night on the verge of tears (well mostly me not my husband) from the anger of not finding the rails. We were SO HAPPY to see your post :)) Now we just have to wait for them to arrive. We were even more happy to see the photos you posted because we have the SAME EXACT CRIB AND THE SAME COLOR. :)) So to actually SEE the same exact crib being converted into a bed using those rails made it really easy to order them and feel a great relief that they will fit.  Your post has been a blessing to us, THANK YOU. I will post pics of our crib being converted into a bed once the rails arrive and we set it up. Again, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU :)

2577ar One thing I would suggest is get some WD-40 and spray the slot area. This will help with squeeking (we had some in the beginning but DH put WD-40 in the slot and it worked. Also, next time we are going to do more wooden beams for where the mattress sits, or a full plank of wood. It is fine now how it is though. Also a rubber mallet to place the railings too.

THANK YOU for the extra tips. The rails are scheduled to arrive on Wednesday July 30, 2014. I will keep you posted on our progress of converting the crib from her toddler day bed into a "big girl" bed as Isabella likes to call it
  • Thank you so much for your post! Just ordered mine tonight! Did you use a box spring too or just the mattress? How did you hubby know what size wood pieces to cut? Thank so much!
  • You can buy a flat piece at your mattress store instead of a box spring. However we just did plank wood which DH just measured and cut, because yet again DH is cheap. Next time we would do smaller/more wood beams or just a solid plank, but it isn't a big issue.

  • So we got our rails today but can't seem to get them to latch? Any ideas?!??

DH had to use a rubber mallet to get them in place. Once they were in half way he used WD-40 to get them in the rest of the way in. It was tedious and a strain, but with my help we were able to get them in properly. It is a tight fit though.
