Baby Names

Kobe Beef!

My husband and I have gotten in the habit of calling my bump "Kobe" and it's caught on to the point that we can't imagine calling the baby anything else, but to be honest we don't want to name the baby after a steak... No matter how delicious it is :p
The question is- does anyone know any names that would work with the nickname Kobe? I know it's strange to base a name off a nickname but any thoughts ladies? It would really be appreciated :)

  • I agree, Corbin is the only one I can think of. Or you could use Cody and then have Kobe as a sound-alike nickname.

  • Wow. :(. I never thought this would be so difficult... I've even googled it and I can't seem to find anything.

Well, it's not a steak, it's a place name ... (Kobe, Japan ... beautiful seaside city).

I also think of Kobe Bryant.

ETA: I mean, yes, people think of Kobe beef, but it's a place, not like a cut of beef.

  • What about a FN that starts with Ko (or Co) and a MN that starts with Be.... like Cole Benjamin?

  • No suggestions, sorry, but nicknames don't always have to "make sense" when compared to the given name...
  • Honestly, I think you're putting way too much stock in a fetus nickname.  Just give him a proper name and if the Kobe NN sticks then it sticks.  I can't even remember what we used to call DS before he was born.  Peanut?

I know lol. It's just that we like the name so much-

I really like the Jakob suggestion :). I'll definitely tell DH about it. Thanks ladies !

This. Our baby's fetus NN is still fun to use even though it has nothing to do with her actual name

  • This is a little silly, no?  You either name your child Kobe or you nickname him Kobe and find another name.  I also agree with pp - that Kobe is a place and not just beef.  My first association would be Kobe Bryant or the city in Japan.  Not with beef.

Don't worry, I'm working on it.

  • Yeah wow, this is really strange to me. How many people nn the fetus Bean. Either it sticks (how many Ellie Beans do you folks know) or it doesn't. I wouldn't try to pick a name just to use Kobe. And are you really saying CO-bay or like Kobe Bryant?

This. We called DS something all the time in the womb and I can't remember what it is to save my life. I'm asking DH and he can't remember. Trust me, he'll go through tons of nicknames. The nurses in the hospital called him Shrek, the pediatrician now calls him Tigger because he bounces constantly. He's only 6 months old so in sure even more will come
  • The nickname you use doesn't have to make sense with the name. My son is named Kaleb but a lot of the time I call him Louie or Lou. When I was pregnant with him, his nick name was Bubba which became Bubbalouie and got shortened to just Louie. If you like a full name that shortens to Kobe or like just Kobe if you like. Just don't feel the need to settle on a name.

  • I really don't see the problem with the name Kobe. Isn't it pronounced differently anyway (Koh-bee vs. Koh-bay)? If you're really against Kobe as a full name I like the Jacoby suggestion.

  • Coby and Koby are legitimate diminutives of Jacob. I would use one of those spellings to get away from the beef association. Though honestly, Kobe Bryant probably comes to mind first.

  • My son's middle name is Kobe....

  • This is actually the first I've heard of the Japanese city :). And yeah, DH and I discussed the Jacob/Jakoby etc name and we both LOVE it. Thank you all again for your suggestions.

(And yeah lol, Kobe Bryant is DHs fav current basketball player and that's how the nickname originally started- but he was named after the beef :p )

  • We used to call my bump Kobe! I would have fought to have that as the middle name but he turned out to be a girl so that was taken off the table. Can you use it as a middle name?
