NWMR: Mirena experiences?

So I had my Mirena IUD inserted two weeks ago.  I finished my cycle 1-2 days later.  Then it came back a week ago and has not gone away yet.  I know irregular bleeding is normal, so I don't feel concerned enough to call my doctor.

I was just wondering what others' experience has been like.  When did your cycle go back to "normal"?

Re: NWMR: Mirena experiences?

  • I know you asked specifically about mirena but I figured since I have an IUD, skyla (3 years instead of 5), I would chime in. After the insertion I had two days of bleeding then it stopped. About 4 days later I began bleeding heavy which lasted for a week and a half. Haven't had any bleeding since. This is my 1st month with it so I can't answer specifics on when my cycle will regulate.

  • I've had Mirena twice.  Both times I never had a period while it was in.  It was glorious.

  • I got mine at my 6 week pp appointment with DS2.  I was just finishing my pp bleeding when it went it.

I bled on and off but pretty steadily for several months after that.  Man, I was pissed.  I've had extremely regular and slightly heavier than normal periods since then.  5 years worth.

Overall, I am happy with the Mirena.  I like not thinking about bc but I have not had the happy side-effect of light to non-existent periods as is widely reported.  Nevertheless, I'm getting my second one soon.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am

  • Forgive my post hi-jack. If you ladies are not getting your periods how do you know you are not pregnant? Do you take tests every month?

I just trusted that the Mirena was doing its job. Plus, having been pregnant twice now, I don't think there's any way I could have missed it. I never really had PMS symptoms with the exception of some moodiness, so pregnancy has been in a league of its own.

  • I had Mirena for a total of 6 years. After the initial bleeding, I either didn't have a period or just had light spotting for a day or two. I loved it!

I was also able to get pregnant within 6 months of removal, at age 37.

I was just lurking on this post but this is actually how one of the women of "I didn't know I was pregnant" didn't realize until she was 5.5 months along! She shared her humorous and moving story on Slate earlier this year.

No, I just assume I'm not unless I have some reason to expect otherwise - symptoms, etc.  Only ended up taking a couple tests in the 4 or so years I had it.  Never positive.

  • When I was on depo I used to take one every 2 months. Given how clear my body made it that I was pregnant when it did happen intentionally, I now just trust the Mirena to do its job and figure I'll notice if I do get pregnant. I still have a bunch of pregnancy tests just in case I get nervous.
  • Lurker here, but thought I'd also comment....I'm on my second Mirena and I love it as well. I tell everyone about it. I went from terrible periods to nothing at all. Its been wonderful. Placement is not as terrible as everyone makes it out to be.

MamaAllison- I have never been pregnant (I've used the Mirena for over six years now). I just trust it. I imagine if I did get pregnant i would notice, also as pp mention I have pregnancy tests on hand just in case i feel paranoid.

  • I had a Mirena for 5 years, took it out and got pregnant within 2 months, and then had another Mirena inserted last year, at 8 weeks PP.

I get really bad hormone-induced migraines, so I can't take most birth control pills.  The Mirena has a coating of hormones, but in my case that's actually a benefit, because it stops your period.  No period = no migraines. I didn't have a period for 3 years the first time I was on Mirena.  And I've only had 2 periods since having my baby - she's 18 months.

I LOVE MIRENA.  Seriously.  I tell all my friends to get it.  I can't emphasize how awesome it is to just NOT think about your fertility for five years.

  • I am mostly a lurker here but I always chime in on Mirena posts because I was so excited to get one placed and I ended up being the 1/1000 in which the IUD perforated the uterus and ended up embedded by my liver.  It needed surgically removed when DD was 16 weeks old.  It sucked to say the least.  Just a risk so always do your research.

  • My cycle went back to normal pretty much right away. I was one of those "unlucky" ones that still gets a period every. single. month. UGH.

  • I got mine 6 weeks postpartum, bled for another month or so, and haven't had a period since then. Love it!

I'd test if I developed early pregnancy symptoms. Otherwise, I just trust that it's working.

  • I got mine in October, and my experience echos some of the other responses.
Cycle finished a 2-3 days after insertion. Spotting returned ~2weeks after, and stuck around for 2 weeks. Cycle #2 was incredibly lighter, more along the lines of spotting, lasted about a week. Waiting for cycle 3.

I do wonder if it has affected my desire for my fiance. We've been intimate 2-3 times since mirena was inserted, the spotting was making it difficult for a bit... Or maybe that's due to the puppy he insisted on getting that refuses to sleep at night... hmm... yeah I'll blame that puppy!!!! ;)
