Anyone's LO have difficulty pooping with an allergy/intolerance?

My DS is almost 5 months. He is on omprazole for reflux and lactulose (stool softener) because he has a very hard time pooping-- in theory this is supposed to make his stools liquid and therefore easier to push out but he still hardly ever poops on his own (without a suppository). I have been dairy free since 4 weeks and he has had significantly less gas and pain since then but has periods of getting worse. Omeprazole is at highest dose for weight. I have been soy free for the past week (with one inadvertent slip up) at suggestion of pedi and GI. Waiting for him to poop during the week so we can do another guiac stool (hidden blood) -- there is no obvious blood and only one recent stool has been mucousy. When I was not milk free, he would grunt, strain and serious struggle to poop for hours and would finally go. Once I went milk free, he stopped straining and having difficulty but stopped going with any frequency. I know EBF babies can go awhile but my DS gets uncomfortable, has crazy exacerbation in his reflux/projectile spitting, has horrible sewer-smelling gas and if I give him a suppository (per pedi he is not to go more than 3 days), he usually explodes instantly with poop. I am struggling with giving soy free a little longer (or eliminating other allergens) or pushing for more testing to rule out other bowel/GI conditions. I am particularly concerned about Hirshsprungs but since he has pooped regularly/often in the past wonder if that is even a valid concern.

  • OMG, I could haven't written this exactly. DD was pooping fine at first, then nothing. And when she did poop she was a screaming, bloody murder mess. Our gastroenterologist said that because of the milk allergy, it was like pooping glass. The allergy had created sores in her intestinal tract and the stool softeners didn't help. Then we were concerned about Hirshsprungs. After all the testing we discovered that she's just a slow pooper. However, we dropped the stool softener and give her milk of magnesia. Though, doc told us to be careful with the MOM because the body can get used to it. If that happened then to use Miralax. So we use the MOM, and gauge how much she needs. Typically she gets 1/2 teaspoon, but if her stools are a little harder/softer we'll adjust the doseage.

  • @Stillharbor what testing did they do for your DD? We go to the GI again on 12/9 and I think we are going to have to push for testing even though I don't want to put him through it. Did a barium enema show sores on the intestines? How is your DDs disposition when not pooping? My DS is exceptionally "high needs" and is a horrific sleeper. He wants to be on the boob all.night.long. Were her stools hard when she was having difficulty pooping? My DS had one harder stool but otherwise they were normal, now they are pure liquid (when he goes, which is still rare). Both my DDs have constipation issues so it is conceivable that he is a slow pooper that is much worsened by the milk/soy allergies. Did your DD have the red ring around her bottom? I always forget to ask pedi/GI if this is a true sign of allergy but DS has it. I am praying it is not Hirschprungs and that we can solve this with my diet modifications.

  • At first pooping was fine. Then it would be 3-4 days between BM, then a week, en almost 10 days. Suppositories helped sometimes, but at one point she was so constipated that she was impacted and couldn't poop. Normally, DD is a laid back happy girl. All of a sudden, she would pull her knees to her belly and scream and fuss. She'd be cranky, clingy, and pooping was a massive dramatic scene. Originally she had one test to map the top of her stomach because of severe acid reflux. We were referred to a gastroenterologist which had us collect poop samples to test for infection, while she did a test for blood. (Our gastro said that blood in LO stool at this age is b/s of infection or milk allergy.) Then we had the barium enema to map the colon(?) and rectum. The barium just lets doc see if the structure is ok and if there is a pressure change. Sometimes that can give them an idea if Hirshsprungs is there. For us, doc saw a "shadow" that she didn't like, so we had to go for a rectal biopsy. Everything was normal. She's never had a red ring, but a little bleeding from trying to poop when she was constipated. When she's dairy free and the MOM is helping with BM, and she's not holding it in, her stools are soft like toothpaste. But if she isn't having regular BM or I slip up on the dairy, her poop is HARD! She can only get out small rocks and screams the whole time. Our gastro is finally convinced that she's just a slow pooper. I hope things turn out okay for your LO and you.
  • We struggled and struggled and were using miralax and I kept asking and asking saying - this can't be normal and our ped insisted it was super common.  FInally after getting an egg allergy diagnosis - it was night and day.  - Off eggs she poops once a day - easily  - happily and soft.  Mess up and give her egg - constipated - in fact we track it to see if she's been exposed accidentally.
