Homecoming!

My twins were born via c-section on October 18th at 37w6d. I had a very easy pregnancy with the exception of one scare at 20 weeks that turned out to be nothing. I was never on bed rest and I worked (part-time) up until the day before delivery, even going to court appearances the week they were born. I had my last ultrasound with the MFM on 9/17 and both babies were looking good. Their estimated weights were both over 4 pounds with H weighing about 2 ounces more than E. I went to the hospital expecting to come home a few days later with 2 healthy 5-6 pound babies. H, the boy, was right in that range weighing 5 pounds, 14 ounces, but E was only 3 pounds, 3 ounces. She was admitted to the NICU due to her size, low blood sugars, jaundice and low platelets.

After a week the only thing that had resolved was the jaundice, so she was transferred to a level 3 NICU. That hospital is about an hour away from where we live, so the daily drive was hard but the doctors seemed confident and this was supposed to be a routine case for them unlike the first hospital. The official diagnosis was IUGR (we are not happy at all with the MFM for missing that diagnosis). Within a couple of days her platelet levels were normal and as she gained weight, her glucose levels were getting higher. They started to wean her off of the IV fluids and she was doing great until a week and a half ago. She started to regress and was back up on a high dose of fluids. After several scary days of not knowing what was going on, the doctors ran some more tests and the endocrinologist diagnosed her with hyperinsulinemia. She started some medication for that and has been doing great since then. She was weaned off of IV fluids and a high calorie formula supplement. She's in the process of being weaned off steroids, but that is something we can finish at home, so she has been cleared to come home today! After 5+ weeks in the NICU, she is coming home just in time for Thanksgiving!

I'm excited but a little nervous about finally having two at home. Taking care of one is hard enough.
