We went to the pedi today for 1 month check up and I explained the issues we've been having that point to possible reflux issue. The doc prescribed Zantac and we took it to be filled. When DH went to pick it up, the pharmacist said he wanted us to call the doc to double check the dosage because he thought it was high. The bottle says 3/4 teaspoon twice a day. DD is 5weeks tomorrow and 12lbs.
Anyone else have a prescription for Zantac and know if this dose sounds correct? I'm going to call the pedi but they're closed until Friday.
Whoa!! That is waaay too high!! The pharmacist was right- you should call. If I saw that rx in my store, I probably wouldn't have even filled it at all before calling myself. Typical starting doses for 0-3 mo babies is somewhere between 0.6 and 1.8 ml twice a day. Maybe your doc meant 3/4ml?? As in 0.75ml? My DS is 11lbs at 8 weeks and takes 1ml twice a day. Please don't give your LO 3.75ml (which is 3/4 tsp)!!!!
We give 1.5 ml twice a day, he's 12 lbs. FWIW, my ped told me that they can't really OD on it, that it's very safe even if they accidentally get too much. But still, maybe don't give the whole dose until you confirm.
It definitely isn't right! We called the pediatrician on call and they confirmed it should only be 1.5ml twice a day. I'm not sure if it was the fault of the pharmacy or the doc but I'm glad we double checked!
