Maternity clothes epiphany!

During the past few months I have been scouring maternity stores' sale sections hoping to score some relatively cheap maternity clothes. I am appalled by how expensive and low quality maternity clothes is and I refuse to pay full price. Well... even when it's on sale, the prices are not worth the quality and style IMO.

Today I decided I would branch out and look for maternity-esque clothing in other stores.... OMG, what wonderful clothing I did find! I am sure that other moms may have discovered this already but it hadn't even crossed my mind! I found many maternity friendly tops and dresses at a variety of outlet stores (banana republic, ann taylor, new york & company, GAP, Forever 21) for 50%, 60%, and 70% off! Needless to say, I stocked up! I'll still need to get maternity pants but I'll be doing that shopping online.

Hopefully this is helpful for some bumpies but I'm guessing most of you have already made this discovery... lol

  • It's a good idea, but remember that your bump and breasts are still going to get bigger. Maternity clothes stretch to accommodate, regular clothes do not. It would suck to have to buy new clothes again at 35 weeks because nothing fits.

  • I have been doing some of the same thing! The Victoria's Secret tunics have been the best. You can get them for around $15 and they have ruching on the sides and are stretchy like maternity clothes.

  • I agree with @smittypants - at this point some regular clothes will still fit, but once you get to 30, 35+ weeks your belly is going to get a lot bigger and I'm guessing most regular clothes won't accommodate your size...even some of my maternity clothes got too small towards the very end!  Things like cardigans will obviously be fine, but I wouldn't invest too heavily in non maternity stuff, they're just not designed for what our bodies are doing.

That said, I've had awesome luck with sales at Gap maternity, Old Navy, Motherhood, etc.  The quality might not be phenomenal, but I find the Gap and ON stuff to be on par with their normal clothes.

I definitely have 2 sizes of maternity clothes one for early on in pregnancy and another set for the second half especially tops.

  • Also try goodwill. The one I go to is in a really nice part of town so they have designer clothing for thrift prices and since people only wear maternity clothes for a short time they are usually in good condition.

Ditto! I've gotten two pairs of like new gap maternity jeans and four pairs of work slacks for less than $30 (total for all six pairs of pants!).

  • I've had a really hard time with maternity stores because pre-pregnancy I was a size 0 or 2 and now the small sizes are too big and the extra small sizes are rarely carried by maternity stores. The stuff I purchased today will fit my growing belly in the weeks to come and will also be something I will wear post-pregnancy. It also resembled a lot of what I had seen in maternity stores.

Towards the end of my pregnancy, when my belly really needs that extra room... perhaps I'll invest in maternity tops that can better meet my needs. I guess I'll just have to wait and see!

I've just been buying flowy tops and big sweaters from places like Anthropology and Nordstrom Rack. My sister gave me all of her maternity clothes so my thinking at the moment is to buy bigger pieces that can accommodate my growing belly for awhile and give me clothes to wear after the baby gets here but before I lose all the weight. When I get too big for those items I'll rock my sister's maternity items.
    I'm thinking the same thing

  • Length is an issue, can it go all the way over belly+boobs, and will it still go all the way over in 10 weeks? My bump is popping out of my men's johnny cash and guns & roses shirts i use as pjs. :(

I have this same problem, motherhood did have some cute tops that I got in small that fit pretty good.
  • Maternity clothes shopping stinks in Australia so all my clothing except 2 pairs of pants (that I got online) are just sized up non-maternity clothing. I'm planning a substantial ASOS spree to get me through 3rd tri with some real maternity clothes in the near future though.

  • For small stuff I had good luck at Pea in the Pod. A lot of the XS were even too small. Also ASOS runs way smaller and you can get great deals. I can't fit into anything at Gap and Old Navy, so I wouldn't look there for maternity.
  • For me, there's no way regular clothes would look ok on me. My bump is big enough now that even loose shirts are shorter in the front than in the back. And obviously I'm only going to continue to grow.

  • I invested in a bunch of non-maternity shirt dresses that I'll wear as long as possible and then use again afterwards, and when I get to the point where nothing fits I'll stick to cheapie maternity t-shirts and tanks with cardigans.

  • I went to Ross and got a few sweaters and a pair of jeans. I've also gotten a few pairs of pants on sale that should be here next week. Other than that I'm using what has been given to me and I figure that whatever I buy will just get added to the stash of maternity clothes that has gotten passed around between all of my family members...it's nice to have the same general body build as so many of my sisters/cousins/friends!
  • After getting my BFP I starting hunting for maternity style clothing, being short an starting small chested has put me at an advantage as ill likely be able to wear any long style shirt or dress for duration of pregnancy.

Also fashion belts and open sweaters, omg best ideas ever

  • I am so cheap when it comes to clothing! So I look for deals everywhere. I found some great tops at babies r us for $8 each (regularity $50) so I was happy with that!
I agree with others, regular clothing may fit now, but in 10 weeks your belly might be peeking through!

  • I had some non maternity shirts that fit me until pretty late last time, so it is possible. Once you hit a certain point nothing really fits right, maternity or otherwise!

This!  Last pregnancy, I only had one actual maternity shirt, and it didn't fit me the last few weeks.  Two of my non-mat, stretchy shirts did, so they were all I wore at the end.

  • I have been loving old navy and gap! I catch the sales at the outlet! Very comfy and cute
  • I have only a few pieces and will buy my first maternity pants tomorrow on Black Friday sale at gap. I need longs and they fit best.

Also, I wear my husbands sweaters or flannels + skinny belts. Lol
  • @Kacie I was going to do that but kohls had their Black Friday sale online and they were $3.50 more. So worth it not to go out and brave the special brand of crazy in my area
