Anxiety Disorders and Pregnancy

When I was 17 I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, that at times cause horrible panic attacks and fainting spells. Now that I am pregnant my anxiety is flaring up again and I can't seem to make people understand what is going on. Has anyone come across any articles about anxiety and pregnancy that might help my friends and family understand?

Re: Anxiety Disorders and Pregnancy

  • I have really bad anxiety and my doctor told me that the pregnnacy hormones increses your anxiety so it makes it worse. as well as depression. i have been doing ok managing it with out meds because i am not intersted in taking anything but i have had two pretty bad episodes and my doctor has really pushed taking medication that is completely safe according to her. i still have declined but maybe its something you should talk to your doctor about.

  • I won't take meds like yourself. Its just the struggle to make others understand
  • I also have some anxiety issues during and after pregnancy. Here is a link to a website that I found helpful. https://www.postpartumprogress.com/the-symptoms-of-postpartum-depression-anxiety-in-plain-mama-english
The whole web site is good. For me it was helpful to know that I wasn't "crazy" or alone. Wishing you the best.

  • Hi, I have anxiety disorder. I have had it since I was a teenager if not all my life. My anxiety also triggers panic attacks, insomnia, high heart rate, etc etc etc

The thing with anxiety is that it can be triggered not only by emotional or psychiatric changes but also biological changes. As soon as your hormones start shifting it is actually changing the brain chemistry that your body is used to. If you are prone to anxiety, you will probably experience it.

One thing you can ask your doctor about is if Benadryl is something that would be ok to take periodically while you were pregnant. I had a physician tell me that one of the things about Benadryl that makes people sleepy is that on a molecular level it has a similar structure to valium. Otherwise, I take Zoloft for my anxiety. I used to be on Prozac but when I started TTC they switched me to Zoloft. I actually read a study the other night about seratraline (zoloft) and TTC depression/anxiety. So that is something else you could investigate.
