Any recs for homemade cleaning products?

Any homemade cleaning supply users out there? I'm going broke buying Shout! stain remover, carpet cleaner, antibacterial spray for kitchen counters, etc. Was wondering if anyone has recipes or links for alternatives to expensive store-bought?

  • Will be following this... I go through crazy amounts of Clorox wipes... would love something to kill germs but less costly and more natural.

  • Plain white vinegar mixed with water in a spray bottle works great for counters, mirrors, high chairs, etc.  Vinegar can be used for just about anything.  For stain removal on kid clothes, though, nothing seems to work better than OxiClean for me.  I buy the powdered version which isn't too $$ and do a soak once a week where I fill up the utility sink with water and a scoop of the OxiClean powder, toss in all the kids' clothes that need pre-treating, and let it soak for a few hours.  This gets probably 95% of the stains out and it is super easy.

  • We got a spritzer bottle and it came with cleaning solution recipes on the back. For kitchen counter tops, I use 2 oz vinegar, 2 cups water, and a pump of liquid dish soap.

We switched to "unpaper towels" a year ago - just got a bunch of kitchen rags and mixed in some diaper flats - and we do rag laundry about twice a month. I find it's easier to clean with.

  • Vinegar and water mixture is a great disinfectant.  I used a solution of baking soda and water to clean my oven and it worked wonders.  Great for getting rid of grease and grime.  I do keep Lysol wipes around just because it gives me extra assurance in killing those yucky germs.  If you google natural cleaning solutions or look on Pinterest, you'll find lots of ideas.

  • For the vinegar users does it stink up the house when you use it? Or not really? I found this for carpet cleaning: 1/4 cup of all three; salt, borax and vinegar. Rub paste into carpet and leave for a few hours then vacuum. I'm going to give it a whirl this week!
  • I have been looking into this lately and it looks like plain vinegar and baking soda both make great cleaners for almost everything.  It's much more economical and its healthier for you and your family to use them as cleaners.

  • I've always used vinegar to clean glass!!! especially now that I have a little one, the back of the clorox/lysol wipes say something about cleaning after using on food surfaces and everything else also leaves a residue. If i don't know what is in the windex then i dont want LO licking it off the mirror
  • Last year for Christmas my mom bought me these Norwex cleaning cloths https://www.norwex.biz/publicstore/stores/karenbyler/AM/catalog/Norwex-Collections,206.aspx
I have an antibacterial cloth and the window cloth.  I just get the antibacterial cloth wet with water and wipe down all bathroom surfaces (mirror, sink, toilet, bath) and wipe it off with the dry window cloth and I'm done.  The glass and bathroom fixtures are streak free.  It is so easy to use every couple of days and only need water.  I don't use any of the other products since these were a gift and I haven't gotten around to looking at what else they sell, but I know my mom has more and thinks they're great.  I'm sure there are many similar products on the market this is just the only one I've used.
  • Ditto on vinegar & water for surfaces. I buy the Clorox green toilet bowl cleaner and still keep antibacterial wipes around for some things.
Like the poster above me, I just got a Norwex cloth and I LOVE it. It got the grout in my tiled shower cleaner than anything ever, with only water, in one pass, no back and forth scrubbing. Buying myself more for Christmas and giving some to others as gifts as well.
  • I use vinegar to clean the microwave especially.
