BLW

Do you have to wait until LO is 6 months to start? DS will be 5 months on the 28th and he's ready. He grabs at food on our plates, watches us eat, moves his mouth like he's chewing, and he is sitting unsupported. I want to make some sweet potato fries and see how it goes. I know avocados are best to start with, but i think he will bite off too big of a piece, he clamps down pretty hard on our fingers (and my nipples ouch!!). Should I try giving him some food or wait a bit longer?

Re: BLW

  • I waited till my son was taking food off my plate to start. Which for us was 5.5 months. I think readiness happens when it happens. So, if he shows all the signs then have at it!

  • You can put food in front of him and see what he does. Honestly, most babies don't want to "eat" the food (all solids are for practice and fun, not nutrition, for the first year anyway) but they enjoy playing with it and "doing what everyone else is doing".

When DS started showing interest like your LO is, we knew he wasn't ready and offered him a spoon at dinner time instead. That worked perfectly, because he was doing what everyone else was...playing with silverware!

The signs of readiness for solids are:

    Loss of tongue thrust reflex
    Sitting unassisted
    Interest in solid foods
    Teeth (sometimes)

If he still has the tongue thrust reflex, his digestive system has not matured enough to really properly process solid foods. But with BLW, baby has enough control of the situation that he usually won't eat if he's not ready. He'll just play. So give it a try with a safe food and supervise every second. Good luck!

  • I'd say put something on his tray and see what happens. We started around 5.5 months because he was showing readiness signs.

You should read the book before you start. They go over signs that the baby is ready and address a lot of safety concerns. I'm definitely glad I did instead of relying only on what I read online
