Supplementing momma's

How are you doing bottles? Do you bf then give formula? Do you give one bottle with the milk and formula mixed, or 2 separate bottles? Our pedi wanted us to do 2 separate bottles for our trial period. I was bfing and then offering a bottle, but he gets so distracted bfing now, I'd rather just pump and give a bottle.

Re: Supplementing momma's

  • Our pedi wanted us to bf and then offer 3oz and when I was at work, he'd get 3oz of milk and 3oz of formula. He had lost almost a lb in a month and in the past 2 weeks, he's gained 1.5lbs. She wants us to continue what we're doing. I'm just getting tired of breastfeeding because he gets distracted so easily. I've tried nursing in a dark quiet room, but he'll get distracted with his hands. I'd like to switch to pumping and then just give him one big bottle.

  • When LO is at daycare she gets one bottle that contains both. I have the daycare mix the formula first (3 oz) then add 3 oz of breast milk. When I have her I EBF with the exception of one 4oz bottle of formula that daddy gives at night so I can get at least 6 hours straight of sleep. She's a piggy for being such a little peanut. I don't think she cares what's in her bottle as long as she's eating.
  • At daycare LO receives three bottles of formula and one bottle of BM. I BF at home on weekdays before/after work and on weekends. I also give a bottle of formula if she is hungry and we are out sometimes.
  • I EP and my pedi wanted me to give him BM in one bottle and formula in a separate bottle.  That was a disaster.  LO refused the formula.  Now I mix and he takes it like a champ.

  • When I need to supplement, I mix formula and BM together when I can.  Depends on how much pumped milk I have on hand.

We are also dealing with distraction issues and DD2 has not been nursing well.  And since I also have a 2 year old, I can't go off to a quiet room and nurse every time the baby is hungry!

I have found it helpful to start off with the bottle first, just 1-2 ounces (depending on when she last ate and how hungry I think she is).  It takes the edge off the hunger.  When she starts to relax and settle and get drowsy, I switch her to the breast and let her nurse to sleep.

  • We mix it in one bottle. It all ends up in the same place anyway. ;)

  • I was EBF but LO didn't gain any weight in two months so I went to EP. So now we do 2oz of BM and 2oz of formula in one bottle during the day then at night he get 3 formula bottles cause I don't pump enough. My last pump session I put in the freezer so I'll have some when I stop pumping.
