I've been reading online and there are mixed reviews about coffee in first tri... Do you think a cup in the AM is ok? I'm thinking I can do half coffee / half water in a cup to dilute it? Good idea or no? What do you ladies do?
With my first I gave it up but when I tried this time I was a mess. I just limit myself to one caffeinated drink a day. Instead of diluting it why don't you try making a weaker pot of coffee? Half a scoop of beans instead of a whole?
Up to 200 mg per day is fine. Enjoy your morning coffee as long as you can tolerate it. I had to give it up at 5 weeks too, it was making me gag. I'm just now able to start drinking it again in very small portions.
To those saying it makes you gag, I'm in the same boat. I had a fervent love of coffee, but it became disgusting early on. At 11 weeks, I can stomach it more so if it's in latte form and if I have it with food. If you really need the pick-me-up.
To the OP, additionally, get yourself a tiny mug. It can help you feel like you're having your morning ritual with less caffeine. (This was important when I was still drinking it, because I'd always loved a mega mug of it.)
My MD (and several studies that I've read) said up to 350 mg per day is fine. I've been doing half decaf, half regular for my cup in the morning which is certainly under that. No reason to give it up entirely!!
Thanks for all the advice ladies! I drink my coffee black so I wasn't sure if it had more caffeine than others who put in a bunch of milk/cream etc. But I will take some of your tips and continue to enjoy! I appreciate it!
I have one cup every morning. With my first I was having two cups each morning but once I got to about twenty weeks the baby started dancing like a maniac after the second so I cut it out. I think one is fine.
No one really brought this up, but if you're interested in *why* caffeine is to be limited - it reduces the oxygen available in your blood. You start to get measurable effects on the baby and your ability to carry to term when you exceed 200mg/day. When you say you're coming across conflicting advice on the internet, I'm guessing that you're coming across both the old & the new wisdom. Old was no caffeine. New is not more than 200 mg/day.
Perfectly fine says my OB...I had to change my coffee time from 8am to 11am re nausea and I found I stayed more alert in the afternoon. I cut it out completely in the beginning but by noon I was a zombie lol

*Lurking* If your body is used to the coffee... Don't cut it cold turkey. My dr put me back on 300mg a day due to the headaches. If I had just cut back instead of cut it out completely, we think the headaches would have never reeked havoc. My mom had a FIT when I told her I'm still drinking it... Old school thought was you were going to m/c if you drank any amount of coffee. (So glad that was debunked!!!). Enjoy it while you can... For a while just the smell of it in the house would turn me green
I tried giving it up but I only lasted one day as the headache was SOOOO bad
Now I just have one cup in the morning, I watch my chocolate intake, no sodas. and I may have a cup of decaf in the evening which has a slight caffine content.
I do Keurig and unfortunately I prefer the Caribou to the HalfCaf pods other wise I would switch.
@Redheadbake I'm not saying it "removes" caffeine but you have to pour in less coffee to save room for adding milk/cream. Isn't that what you dairy+coffee people do?
If you're trying to stick to the 200mg daily limit just be careful about Starbucks. Just a tall brewed coffee there has around 260mg, and a grande has 330. There is variation as well so any given cup can have a lot more than that. Espresso drinks have less.
I can't have coffee anymore or tea for that matter although I was a heavy drinker, now even water tastes like bleh to me. I don't have morning sickness *knock on wood* but I feel queasy sometimes and certain things increase it or at least don't taste good anymore like coffee tea, and water for that matter -_-

That is all part of morning sickness, unfortunately. It's not just vomiting, aversions and nausea count too. That's how it started for me.
I tried to replace coffee with tea or hot chocolate, then couldn't tolerate those things either. Water is ok now but I also went through a stage where it made me gag. Have you tried sparkling water or gingerale? Those helped me a lot when nothing else appealed.
I'm drinking 1 12 oz drip with some creamer every day, it's about 150 mg. My Dr says she prefers 8oz or less, other Dr's in the practice say 16 is fine, so I'm doing my own rules.
My mom also called me on Sunday to tell me that she's concerned about me drinking coffee and not doing everything I can for "our" baby... yeah... I bout punched her through the phone
I love my coffee and couldn't give that up. I just enjoy the taste and don't need it for caffeine. I switched to doing half decafe and half regular so it is only half the caffeine I'd usually have you could try that I your worried about the caffeine I have actually switched to decafe all together don't water it down there are other options
I can drink coffee again? that's very strange I think my nausea was really just a stomach bug because it cleared out and I can eat and drink everything again, only lasted a couple of days. please don't tell me that morning sickness can come and go every couple of days

I slowly changed the rations of caffeinated to decaf in my morning coffee once I found out. At 11 weeks, it's just a half spoonful of regular to three spoonfuls of decaf. I get to have 2-3 small cups in the morning and it's my favorite part of the day, haha The doctor did say 200mg a day was fine, but I just feel less paranoid when I drink well under that amount.
One 8 oz cup of coffee has 135mg of caffeine in it, you are fine to have 200mg a day. As for those who drink it black vs those who add cream and sugar, it does dilute it some because say you have an 8 oz cup but you put 2oz of creamer in it you will not be ingesting as much caffeine as those who drink it black. I usually drink 2-3 12oz cups a day, going down to one 8 oz cup a day was hard. Instead of another cup of coffee (so that baby is healthy) I have started drinking a cup of sweet cinnamon spice tea caffeine free with honey or splenda in it. Its more of the warmth I think that I am addicted to, especially in the winter

Sure it can ... welcome to the joys of early pregnancy
I drink one cup a day. If I don't I get major headaches. I didn't drink coffee with my DS because I thought I couldn't. This time around I know it isn't a huge deal.
Also yes morning sickness comes and goes. One day you can feel great and the next like crap. Welcome to the 1st Trimester. I am thankful for any symptom I have after our loss because I am just happy to be pregnant!
Everyone tells me 1 cup a day is fine, but the day after I found out I was pregnant again, I went out and bought decaf. Id rather just play it safe until I reach the second trimester.
