Sharp Pains in Buttocks?!

Hi Ladies,

Funny question but since early in my pregnancy I used to once in awhile get this random sharp pain in my left buttocks and now it is almost every day! Especially at night when I get up to go pee it's really bad...I'm thinking it might be getting worse because it's getting colder. I also thought maybe my body just isn't used to the extra weight...but then I came across an article in one of my pregnanct apps about something called sciatica?? has anyone ever heard of this or have this - OR is anyone else experiencing this random 'buttock pain'?? sounds so funny to say! I would appreciate any thoughts or experiences...

  • It's not sciatica, it's just the ligaments in your pelvis weakening from the extra hormones, it happens to me to but on my right. There is a name for it but can't remember off the top of my head

  • I've had the same thing and it comes and goes. I had it pretty bad on the left side early part of second trimester and I am now entering my third trimester and its back.  it hurts when I get up after I've been sleeping or sitting in one position for awhile. I don't think mine is sciatica b/c it is just around my hip/buttocks and doesn't run down my full leg. try getting prenatal massage or a heat pad to help alleviate pain.
  • I was actually just asking my midwife about it yesterday...I have pain on my right hip going into my buttocks. It does run down my leg a little bit but only after my hip/butt has been hurting for a while. I wasn't sure what it was either because I always thought sciatica ran down your leg. She told me it was indeed sciatica (probably combined with round ligament pain) and to try doing a yoga cat pose (getting down on the floor on my hands and knees and arching my back to stretch out the muscles) several times a day. I hope you ladies start to feel better! I feel your pain!
  • Glad to know I'm not the only one! I came across something else called pelvic girdle pain (pgp) and it sounds more like it. It talks about how the pain gets worse at night especially when rolling over or getting up! I'm really thinking this may be it! Yes I hope we all feel better! Thank you girls!!
