cereal answer

I remember the other day someone asked how much cereal babies should eat. My pedi recommends waiting until 5 months then starting with 1 tablespoon three times a day. He said I can go up to 1.5 each feeding if needed.

He also said there is no need for the other food until 6 months.

I know all pedis are different but I figured I would ask that question for you. I can't remember who originally asked about how much to feed...

PS shots suck...especially if you have two kids getting them at the same time and the pedi decides to pull back one's peepee right beforehand. I can't believe i went to that by myself!

If it were me I wouldn't start with solids three times a day even if its just a tablespoon--I would start with once a day, then move to twice a day. I am not sure we ever did three times a day until DS1 was maybe a year and doing finger foods, when we were starting to move him more toward three meals and 2-3 snacks a day, which is what toddlers usually should have.

ugh, I have to take my boys for shots tomorrow too--DS1 just has to get his flu shot but I am sure it will be traumatic as he is finally old enough to understand that it's going to hurt...annnd edited because I just realized you weren't asking for advice--sorry :) clearly I need more sleep!

  • @denverbride2005 Make sure you take someone with you!! The boys needed an extra set of hugs!
  • Oh no @jemasa33. How are the boys feeling?
Seriously every pedi says something different!! Mine said I could start cereal (this was at his 4 month appt). Then to add fruits. And I know a lot of pedis say veggies first!!
  • Wow, the pedis really do say such different things! @andrea0418 I'm surprised by yours saying to start with fruit first! I guess, at the end of the day, you have to do what you're comfortable with.
  • I was very surprised too! I gave him cereal for the 1st time yesterday. He loved it. I will probably start with sweet potatoes not fruit!

Lol! I just started cereal too. He seemed indifferent about it. :|
  • @andrea0418 Enzo is a lot of pain from what the doctor did. He just started getting some energy back. Nicos kick and play piano came today and he's been playing in it for a half hour! You can't even tell he got his shots. How was ty's appointment?
  • My pedi says that cereal is unnecessary. Then again, she wants me to butter Finn's sweet potatoes....

  • @valstulas why not skip baby food all together and give him buttered biscuits for thanksgiving dinner :)

I love how different all the pedis are. Mine has never heard of a rock play....

How much does he weigh if you don't mind me asking? Do you plan on Paula Deenin' them up?

I may actually only do cereal until 5 months when I can start the purées. This whole pumping milk out for cereal thing sucks.
  • @jemasa33 in all fairness, she's really concerned about his slow growth. He's little (13 lbs and 24 inches), but that's not the problem. His head has hardly grown since his 2 month appointment (he's far below the curve for the 5th percentile), and she's concerned he's not getting enough lipids to promote brain development and myelination. Her instructions are to start him on fatty, protein-rich solids ASAP and to keep carb intake to a minimum.

  • @valstulas that is scary. I figured your pedi knew what they were talking about. I've never heard of that before. I hope everything gets better fast!
  • Developmentally he's okay. It just sucks that I'm going to have to make a big deal about starting solids. I wanted to take a more laid-back approach.

  • @valstulas Ds1 got so chubby as soon as I started them. He looked like a baby sumo wrestler. They gain it so fast!

What are you going to feed? I'm really interested in this because Isabelle's head isn't growing along the curve either.
I'm going to start with avocados. I'll try to introduce meats, too, but most babies don't like them a first. I'll probably purée some veggies with BM and butter. If that doesn't work, I may add a little bit of powdered formula to bottles of pumped milk.
