*Update* Unsatisfying Growth Ultrasound

So after making me sit in the waiting room for an hour I finally had my follow up growth ultrasound. Two weeks ago lo was measuring 5 lbs 1 oz. and we needed to see descent weight gain today otherwise the dr wants to induce. So the tech takes the measurements and gets 5 lbs 6 oz, not good enough. Then she says she wants to measure again and "stretched it" to 5 lbs 8 oz. So then the dr comes in (not my regular dr) and he says he's not too happy with the weight gain and wants to remeasure. He measures three times and says he "was able to get me to 6lbs". So I asked him is she actually 6lbs or is that stretched to show more growth and he said that the measurements are just estimates anyways. Well WTF is that supposed to mean?

While I was on the table I had three contractions in 40 mins. On the last contraction he asked me if I realized that I was having a contraction, which I said yes (gee thanks asshat, is that what that intense cramping was?) Then he asked me if I had planned to stay close to home for Thanksgiving because lo may decide to come this weekend. I asked him what his thoughts on induction were and he stuttered, told me to ask my regular OB at my appt tomorrow and then said he thought no because he thought I'd likely go on my own.

So I left basically feeling like the 6lb measurement was bullshit and the first measurement was most accurate since they weren't "trying" to get me anywhere. I've been having pretty consistent contractions all afternoon but wasn't timing them. Now that I'm home I'm going to keep track of them. I'm going to talk to my regular dr tomorrow and we'll also see where I am cervix wise as well. I was really hoping for a much better idea of what was happening after today :(
*UPDATE* So I met with my regular OB today and I explained how they "stretched" the measurements. She guessed that maybe that dr felt I was going to go on my own before we scheduled an induction so maybe he was trying to give me a higher weight to try and make me feel better, who knows. But regardless she said we were going to approach this with the initial measurement of 5 lbs 6oz. So because there was some growth (which is not great) she doesn't want to induce immediately. She thinks I will go on my own probably within the next week or so since I've been having regular contractions (12 mins apart last night) and I've dilated to 2cm in less then a week. She wants to do a bpp and growth ultrasound first thing Monday and go from there. If she still hasn't shown significant growth then we'll induce at 39 weeks (if I'm still pregnant by then). So I feel better after talking to her and that we have a plan. Thanks everyone for your replies :)

Re: *Update* Unsatisfying Growth Ultrasound

  • How frustrating! I'm sorry. Hopefully you get a better understanding of what's going on at your appointment tomorrow!

  • Good luck at your appointment tomorrow. I'm sorry that doctor wasn't very helpful at all. It sounds so frustrating.

  • Oooh, that would give me some serious pause, too.  I hope tomorrow is more productive for you.  And also that your body decides what it wants to do with those contractions!

  • Growth ultrasounds (from what my ob told me) are only estimates, can be plus or minus a lb, which for a little baby is a lot!
  • I would call your regular OB, that would not be reassuring to me either.  I am sorry you are going through this...
ALso I would have called him an asshat and said something like "OMG is THAT what I have been feeling I had no idea I would get contractions!"
  • That's very frustrating, I'm so sorry. Hope you have a better appt tomorrow.

Yikes. I would've left the hospital feeling very uncertain about everything. I'm glad you have another appt tomorrow with your regular doctor. Hope you get more concrete information from him/her.

  • Thanks everyone! I don't want to be induced but I'm worried that lo isn't growing enough in there. I know ultrasounds are just estimates but I feel like they were manipulating the measurements to get better numbers, which may be harmful for lo.

  • Good luck tomorrow.  There's nothing more frustrating then feeling unsure about your own pregnancy.

  • I'm sorry your doc was such a douche, and that LO is measuring small. At least you do get to see your own doctor tomorrow. FX for you and LO.

sorry, that sounds frustrating! :/  At least you have the apt. with your OB tomorrow so hopefully you'll find out more.  I generally don't take a lot of stock in the weight measurements ultrasounds, only cuz they can be off by so much.  But I'm sure your OB who knows your history better will be able to offer you more direction.

ETA: let us know what they say! ;)
  • I'm so sorry lady :( I really think your OB will be able to give you more info and help you define the next steps. Sometimes these specialists are clueless about how to talk to patients. Been there. But we're all thinking of you and please keep us posted on what your doc says!

  • I am so sorry they bullshitted you, that's awful!  Definitely tell your regular OB you're uncomfortable without a plan in place because you feel like lo didn't show improved growth.

Our growth scan on Nov 22 went well enough and even I'm nervous going from BPP to BPP.  Make your feelings known, they're legitimate concerns.  Good luck!

  • We have IUGR and at my appt Tuesday the specialist recommended an induction at 39 weeks. My lil guy is measuring 4 lbs 9 oz and I am really hoping that is an underestimation. Up until now i was told that as long as he is gaining something (which he consistently has, just half the amount) and everything else looked good, then the best place for him was inside my belly. I guess at this point they just think he's not going to gain anymore and since he's full term, get him out? I'm not really sure. I think I'll go on my own anyway soon, and to schedule an induction and have everything planned at this time doesn't matter too much either way. I find out more later today.
Good luck to you and let me know what happens

My dr said today that if she had not gained any weight then they would have induced me today but a little weight gain is at least something. They are going to monitor me really closely though and if she doesn't put on some weight then they want to induce at 39 weeks (which is only 10 days away) because at that point it's safer for her to come out an bulk up on breast milk since the placenta is obviously not providing enough.

  • Yeah that makes sense. My induction is scheduled for this sunday at 6am. I'll be exactly 39 weeks. So I'll let you know how accurate my U/S was!
