I got the call today that are baby has a 1-251 chance of having Down's syndrome.. I am waiting to schedule our ultrasound with the specialist to get a more difinative answer. This is foreign to me. I was not prepared.. I have two healthy babies and blessed no matter what but the unknown is scary and I'm not afraid of raising a baby with downs I'm sad that We could have a child that will have to deal with a disability for the rest of their life in a sometimes cruel world to people who are different. I am trying so hard to not be selfish I'm struggling with being positive and realistic... And We don't even know for sure yet. Has anyone had experience with this.... Please share

  • I have no experience to share, but @kitchencolors might. My T&Ps to you.

To me, the ratio (1 in 251) always sounds much worse than the percentage. 1 in 251 is a less than 0.4% chance. That's over a 99.6% chance of a healthy baby.
    This. Exactly.

  • We had a positive NT test and ended iup being confirmed with a 99.99% positive result for DS on the Harmony test. We decided against the amnio due to chance of miscarriage. We're waiting until our little boy is born to finish out the testing. It's scary at first. There are a lot of unknowns that make it so, not to mention all the complications that can arise. Keeping a positive outlook has helped me through the last few weeks. Good luck and stay positive!!

  • Last pregnancy my quad screen had a 1:150 risk of Down.  No soft markers on ultrasound but I had the amnio that day.  I had to know for sure.  It wasn't a bad experience and the amnio really gave me peace of mind.  These days you can do NIPT and not have to have an invasive procedure if you don't want to.

  • This is a tough position to be in. Education is power. I hope you find some ladies here who can help ease your mind.
  • @kichencolors is the one to ask. She has good advice for moms with this news. I'm sorry you are in limbo, hopefully it turns out to be nothing.

  • Don't beat yourself up for all of the normal thoughts you are having. We would all worry about the same things in your position. @mrspopsicle was so right in telling you to look at the percentage. The chances are so slim. My thoughts and prayers are with you during your next testing.
  • I don't really post here much (if at all), but I wanted to let you know that I am also in your shoes.  We had a 16w u/s to check this baby for the condition that our baby had during my last pregnancy, and while that fortunately was negative, the MFM did find two soft markers for Downs.  We are waiting the results of the Maternit21 test (which we will probably have sometime next week).  Our integrated screen (NT + 12w + 16w bloodwork) came back negative, but that screen has a 10% false negative rate, and Mat21 is much more reliable.

It is a scary place to be.  There are some boards on babycenter relating to DS Pregnancy - I have found reading those in the last few days to be helpful and calming.  For me, the important thing is to have as much information as possible, so we'll wait for testing and then if he does have DS, we will proceed with needed testing (mainly heart) from there.

  • Hugs to you too @jennifers1979!  Everything I said about being here if you want to talk applies to you too!  Waiting is so hard... hang in there.
@kitchencolors - thank you - I appreciate it.  Waiting is hard (and I'm trying not to have a massive "how could this happen to me?  TWICE?" pity party).  If he is in fact diagnosed with DS, I will appreciate your offer to chat.  The good thing for us this time, even if he is diagnosed with DS, is that most of his anatomy (other than EB and short femurs) looks good for now.  That was not the case last time.

  • Thank you all for the t and p and comments. I'm feeling much better. It does sound better to think of it as a percentage but still I keep hanging on to the thought that someone is the ONE. My dh and I have decided to get the marker test and go from there. I am also a person who plans everything and am not sure where we will go from the marker test. The amino sounds invasive and miscarriage scares me- termination is not an option for us so I'm not sure how much benefit further testing would do... Except to prepare. Thank you again so much it does make the bubble feel much smaller when I hear of others being in similar situations. Thank you bumpies!

  • @shopprincss I did not mean to diminish your right to worry or be concerned by breaking down the ratio. Somehow the ratios always look worse to me, but I know that to the mother of a child who fits into that fraction of a percentage nothing else matters. I will definitely be thinking of you and praying that the odds are on your side.
