One & Done: Only child

OAD Confession

One and Only by Lauren Sandler (https://laurensandler.com/one-and-only/) arrived in my mailbox last night and I nerdily excited to read it over the holiday, like I'm going to the beach with a summer romance novel or something.

  • Let me know what you think of it! DH and I avoid the oad conversation like the plague because we get so much backlash from people.

  • I read a pre-release copy back in April. I enjoyed it overall. It's full of data. Each chapter covers a different kind of argument for being OAD. Economic, ecological, etc. She even addresses the religious angle, since some people get grief from that department.

The one recurring quibble I had was that instead of arguing simply that only children are not selfish miserable monsters and in fact turn out just as well-adjusted as anyone, she regularly went to the other extreme about all the ways that only children end up being superior human beings. She's an only child herself as well as being OAD, so go figure. But it did get a little much.

  • I checked it out from the library and it's a quick and easy read.  I thought it was great, especially being an only myself.  Lots of factual information and interviews with other onlies.  There was a lot of discussion about the generation of only children in China and how they are now choosing to be OAD as well.

I don't know that I would buy it but definitely worth checking out at the library!
  • I just placed it on hold at the library so the next time I swing by I can pick it up.
