Told my students today that I am pregnant...

I teach Kindergarten and I wanted to tell my little ones before they left for Thanksgiving break that I am pregnant. Most already knew, I had told a few parents at conferences that I was and then in turn told their kiddos. Many parents also asked me (because of the bump of course) which was a little forward, but oh well no harm!

Anyway, it was INSANELY adorable their responses. I shut my classroom door (I wanted it to be a special little moment between just us...) and I said that I had a secret to tell them. I said "Has anyone noticed that anything different about me?" And one little boy goes, "Ya your getting really fat and you eat food all the time now!" I almost died!! After I told them they all clapped and cheered. Many asked me if it was a boy or girl. I told them I wasn't sure yet and I pointed to the 19th on our Dec. calendar and told them I would find out that day. They all voted for what they thought it would be (boys all picked a boy, girls all picked a girl.. not surprising). I had many name suggestions as well some of my favorites: Waldo, Herman, Bert, and Susie-Q.

I also told them I would be leaving in May and they were super sad to hear that. But I promised that I would send in lots of pictures and would definitely be there on the last day of school to visit. It's SO hard thinking about leaving my little kiddos. I get so attached to them by this point in the year but I know they will be just fine. :)

Any other teachers tell their students about their pregnancy??

  • That is sooo sweet! I melted a little bit. Thank you for sharing!
I work with children and youth at my church. I don't think the little ones know yet, but all my high school kids are super excited. The girls touch my belly all the time and "argue" about who gets to babysit my little bunny first. I keep telling them, good luck wrestling him/her away from me! I love kids. Can't wait to have one of my own. :)

  • I told my second graders today. They were so excited and asked a bunch of questions. One girl  asked if we were going to have a baby shower, so I said we could have a little party before I leave. Then during choice time a few of them wrote me letters or drew pictures about the baby, and one girl even wrote the baby a note. It was so cute!!! I emailed the parents after I told my class so I haven't gotten a bunch of emails back saying congrats which is sweet. It's so nice to be completely out now!
  • I love how swert my firsties have been!! They drae stick pictures of me with a stick baby in my belly... I love it! The name ideas ive gotten from them are Blue Jay, Georgia, Bunny, West Platte... they also have funny ideas about boy vs girl or BOTH (that was an interesting redirect...) they are so tender! Love it

LOVE the name suggestions ;) I have twins in my class (boy and a girl) and the boy said "are you having two babies like mummy or just one." I was like NOPE just 1! Lol! They were very sweet about it... they are good eggs.

  • *squish* I died! That is so sweet! I love how abruptly honest kids are and how it's somehow just not offensive coming from them. *grin*

  • I'm wondering when to tell my third graders. I'm just worried someone will ask how babies are made. :) I know they will be excited about "our" baby.

  • I just told my second graders. They were adorable! I also got many name suggestions along with a million questions. Some even asked, "How will you get the baby out?" and "How did it get there?" I suggested they ask their parents :) My students spent the rest of that day talking to my belly and putting their ears to it. They're convinced they can hear the baby! Gotta love kids!
  • I teach 8th grade Language Arts. I told my 7/8 LA block the Friday before break as a "prize" since my other LA class had won a pizza party for reading more books. I know by the time I get back many of my other students will know already, but I will tell those remaining classes.

There was such a loud celebration when I told them and lots of name suggestions. Plus my husband and I are also adopting from Ethiopia, so they have been super sweet about everything :)

  • I told my 3rd graders on Monday. I told them I was pregnant and I made them pink cupcakes to tell them I was having a girl. It was unforgettable their reactions <3

    **Ready for Baby!**
  • I teach high schoolers and they could tell almost immediately. They've been super supportive while I dealt with some complications and are bummed ill miss the end of the school year! They mostly want to make sure I'll be at graduation!
  • I haven't told my kids yet - they're the last group to know! I'm SO nervous about telling them and something going wrong...I can't imagine "untelling" 400 kids between the ages of 5 and 8. (I teach music, so I have lots of kids!) I was going to do it this week....but now maybe next week!

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • Awe! So sweet
  • Loved your story. Not a teacher, but was an assistant director of a daycare for years so I totally get your relationship with your kids. I left in June and miss them so much. I still see a few of them and I was so excited to tell them I am expecting. These kids are Pre-k and kindergarten so they get it. Lol thanks for sharing!

I was SO worried about this too. But, I think because so many of the parents had already talked to them about it, they have have already had their question(s) answered.

I usually do but some kids that know how they are made try to explain it, even when I ask them not to.

  • I teach high schoolers, too. Last week, one of my seniors said they had a question for me. "There is a rumor ping around the school that you are pregnant. Is it true?" When I said yes, another girl across the room yelled out, "I told you so!" They were excited and bummed, since I am due about two weeks before graduation.
  • I teach high school and my kids have been so awesome about everything. Many of the girls have questions as well as a surprising number of boys (i.e. How do you feel? What is making you sick? Do you want a boy or a girl?). They've also been great about making sure I get to sit enough, that no one talks about anything gross that might make me sick, that if someone starts to get rowdy they shut it down before I even have to do anything. I teach some great kids!

@hsal ... by any chance are you from Manchester by the Sea?  Your signature says Mommy by the sea and it reminds of Manchester by the Sea.. I feel like a total stalker now..  :-S

  • I teach high school students with Asperger's and I haven't told them yet. If they haven't figured it out by winter break, I will tell them when we come back in January.
  • @loveisall25 I'm not, but after googling, I realize I'm only about 40 minutes south of it!
  • This made me laugh...so cute!!!
  • How fun! I never was pregnant while teaching:(

  • Very cool.
I teach middle school in Florida.
Just curious, when are you ladies planning to go on leave? If you don't return before the end of the school year, will you still get paid over the summer?

I will leave when I have the baby. We aren't allowed to take leave before then but I'm due at the end of May, so I won't miss many days. We normally don't get paid in the summer, except for PLC goal money. My maternity leave is only sick days I have accumulated, so for the about 10 I'm out before the end of the school year, I'll be paid.

  • This is such a fun thread, I work in electrical distribution... Reactions were decidedly less adorable and more awkward at my place of employment :) Thanks to all you teachers BTW!

Not sure about your particular school system, but in East TN, I will be allowed to take 3 weeks maternity and still get paid in the summer. I'm due right before the state wide testing, so I'm hoping I will last a little longer than my date...
  • I teach preschool and told my kids about 2 weeks ago. They are all super sweet. 2 girls even said they would have me a baby shower and bring me presents.

I am hoping to make it to their VPK graduation. And then go after and have my Csection. Then they would still have school for about 10 days and I told them I would bring "our" baby to school on their last day to see them thru a window.
