Pregnant after 35

Amnio?

Hi ladies -

I am currently 34, but will be 35 in January and not due until July.  So because of that my doc wants me to consider an Amnio - any thoughts?  Did you do one?  experiences?

Thanks!

Re: Amnio?

  • Hi there.    There are non-invasive options available that detect common chromosomal issues.  They are fairly new.   These go by the names of MaterniT21, Harmony, Panorama (there may be others)   They have a very high accuracy rate.   I chose to have the MaterniT21 performed at 10 weeks.  Based on the results of that, it was not necessary for me to proceed with an amnio, so I was able to avoid the risks associated with that testing.

    Congratulations and good luck!

  • As QOTR said, there are tests you can do earlier which would help you decide whether or not you want to have an amnio. If your results are good on those tests there should be no need for an amnio. I had the same test mentioned above but it was called Verifi. It tests not only for chromosomal abnormalities but you can also find out the sex of your baby much earlier (if you want to)!

    Congratulations on your pregnancy!

  • You are on the young side of AMA... I am 41 and did not do an amnio nor would I have.  I particularly would NOT without test results from the NT (performed between 11-13 wks), AND blood test results indicating inconclusive but higher percentages for genetic abnormalities.  Why would you dr recommend this based on age alone?  I would ask.  Amnios are Highly invasive and do carry risks.  Please educate yourself and ask them their reasoning.  I wish you well and hope you have a wonderful pregnancy and healthy lo!
  • I will be 40. I don't plan on having amino. I am having NT scan next week. So many other options out there before I would do amino.

  • I'm 35 will be 36 one month before DS2 is born. I had the NT scan ultrasound, and the Panorama where they take my blood sample and look at the babies DNA within my blood sample. It's noninvasive and 99% accurate when it comes to screening for what the amnio would screen for. It I came back high risk for something I would have considered the amnio but my doctor said the blood test is just as good and not invasive.

  • I am 35 and had one but not because of my age. I had a high risk of DS on my quad scan. Even then, my doctor gave me other choices (maternit21 or even to do nothing) and didn't push the amnio at all. I ended up having one because I wanted the results faster.

If you want to hear about what the actual procedure was like, I can tell you but it seems like an unecessary (I have tried to spell that right like 6 times and can't!) thing to do just for your age, which is barely on the range for AMA.
  • Whether to have an amnio is very personal decision that you have to make by weighing the risks against the reasons you were advised to have one.  But in case you feel that you need/want to have the procedure, I thought I might be able to provide some (anecdotal) reassurance: I've had them twice, once when I was pregnant with DS #1 (now a healthy 3-year old) and once with this pregnancy.  Neither amnio did any harm to the fetus, though of course, there was a small risk it might have. We researched the perinatologists covered by our health plan and had the amnio done by the plan doctor who had the most experience and best reputation in our city. The procedure itself is mildly painful -- kind of like getting a flu shot. I didn't have any complications either time.
  • Congratulations!
I am 38. I had the maternit21 test done along with the nuchal ultrasound. My doctor said based off of those tests- she does not feel an amniocentesis is needed. In fact, because of those tests and their validity- she rarely does amnios any more.
Wishing you the best of luck!

I would recommend you ask for an appointment with a genetic counselor. We did that when pregnant with our first child. I was 37. She went through our family histories, explained all the different tests, and talked us through what we would do with any information we received without being judgmental. It was fascinating and really helpful to us. Also, because I have a cousin who is profoundly autistic and profoundly mentally retarded, which points toward what would now be a Fragile X diagnosis, she allayed my fears on that point too. (He is on the wrong side of the family and too far removed genetically for that to matter.)
  • I am in a similar boat, currently 34 will be 35 in Jan and due July.  My DR hasn't told me one way or the other just has given me options and made me an appointment with a genetic counselor, we just found out that both of us (me and DH) are carriers for Cystic Fibrousis with is not tested for in the free DNA test nor are neuro tube defects (baby has a 1/4 chance of being affected).  To my understanding that blood test only covers trisomy 13,18 & 21.  Hard to know what to do...

  • I will be 36 when I have my baby.  Not planning on an amnio at this point.  If the ultrasound shows something wonky I would consider it, but being AMA does not make me automatically think I need one.  Yes, the odds of multiple chromosomal genetic disorders increases after 35, but it's still a tiny percent and to me the increased risk just isn't worth it unless there is specific reason to suspect something.  But that's just my opinion.
    Current pregnancy -
First BFP on 1/4/22.  Due date 9/13/22.

Four prior losses, no living children - 1 first trimester miscarriage, 1 blighted ovum, 1 chemical, and one extreme premature live birth daughter who died at 15 days old.
