Doll??? -Cabbage Patch kid/baby or American Girl Baby

I am wanting to get a doll for my daughter for Christmas, she will be 20 months old then. I would like to get something we can get a few extra outfits for so she can play dress up with her. Am considering the cabbage patch kid/baby, I loved mine as a child. A friend told me to get her the American girl baby instead and that her daughter loves hers! Any opinions from Moms who have purchased one or both of these??

  • oooohhh!!! love this question!  i've been thinking about the american girl doll myself for my dd, but the cabbage patch doll is a great idea too!  lol, sorry, no advice/opinions, but i'll definitely be watching this thread!

  • Aren't the American girl Dolls expensive? I'd stick with cabbage patch at this age. I still have all my cabbage patch dolls from when I was little. Love them!!!
  • I agree. I would save your money and buy a Cabbage Patch doll.  Maybe get her an American Girl doll when she's old and can appreciate it more.  My favorite when I was little was my My Child doll.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Child

This is what I was thinking. My supervisor just bought her 3 YO her first American Girl Doll. As a child I loved my Cabbage Patch, especially since I was taken to Cabbage Patch Land to pick it out myself. I'd go with the Cabbage Patch.

  • i loved my bitty baby as a child. the quality of those dolls are amazing. even the clothes are made well. american girl gets my vote
  • We have both.  The bitty baby is much nicer and looks like a baby, which DD likes, but it is also heavier and not as easy for her to carry around.  She plays with both but she tends to carry around the cabbage patch one more.  And the cabbage patch kid was like $12 and the bitty baby was like $80, so there is that.

  • CPK are soft and squishy, BB are hard. BB also has a million cute accesories available, but then again theyre super-expensive. At the end of the day, I would pick whichever one YOU like the best, because you're gonna be the one to play with it in order to get your toddler engaged.
  • I'd go with cabbage patch because of the softer body and price.  Also, the American Girls dolls aren't like the ones from back in the day...it's kind of sad, actually.  Their back stories are pretty lame now compared to the original ones.
  • DS got an AG doll from his grandma last Christmas at 9 months and he's never been too into it and I'm always worried about him breaking it since I know it wasn't cheap and isn't really made with toddlers in mind. He likes his little cabbage patch more right now maybe because its cuddlier. I'd wait a couple years for AG bc then she'll be really excited for it and understand the coolness of it more.

I noticed that too! The American Girl Dolls look completely different from when I was a child and back then there were only like 5, now there's a bunch and they look lame.

  • How did I not even know that Cabbage Patch dolls were still around?! I would go with that bc it seems more age appropriate.

What are you thinking of choosing?

  • My DD got a bitty baby for her first birthday and loves it!  She sleeps with her and loves to change her diaper and put her down for naps.  She was around the same age your daughter is now when my son was born last year and she loved taking care of her baby alongside me.  She has a cabbage patch doll as well and does not like it all.  She actually prefers a $7 doll from Walgreens that has a soft body and softer face to the cabbage patch.
  • The Bitty Baby doll I think the OP is referring to is different from an American girl doll, and cheaper.  DD got a Cabbage Patch doll that we gave to her when she was about 1.  She liked it, but colored all over her face.  I got her a Bitty Baby for her 2nd Christmas when she was 19 months because I was having DS soon so I wanted her to have a more realistic doll.  She also like it, but over all she's not really a baby doll kid despite the fact that she insists on wearing pink and sparkles from head to toe.  So although she's very girly, she's more into dress up and Shaggy Doo than dolls.  She was equally interested in those two doll, but her favorite doll related things have been a doll you feed yourself, she's still interested in the dolls in the aisle that talk and move, and she's always loved the little baby doll stroller.
  • I'd go with a cabbage patch kid.  The bitty baby dolls, are just ridiculously expensive for something you don't know if they're even going to love playing with.

DD2 is 14 months, and she has no interest in DD1's cabbage patch kids.  she just wants something to hold and cuddle with.

I got DD2 this (https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11857737&cp=2255963.4174558.3712505&parentPage=family) for Chanukah, and we're giving it to her tonight.  They have other ones that laugh and giggle and give kisses, but we figured they would annoy DH and I, and we also didn't want something too noisy to wake her up if she rolled over it in the middle of the night.

  • I think a Cabbage Patch would be more appropriate for that age. It's lighter and softer, plus way less money.

  • My mom just got 16 mo old DD the American doll, something like Itsy bItsy Baby...or something like that.  Anyway, my DD LOVES it!  Carrys and pushes her all over the house along with a blanket.  I think it was ~$85.
  • DD has a CP and AG Bitty Baby Twins she got for her 1st bday and really isn't interested in them. Actually DS who is 2 is completely terrified of the AG babies ... He thinks they're real!

  • My daughter is 18 months old and she has a Baby Stella that was from last christmas when she was six months old, and it's still one of her favourites. It skews for the younger crowd, but I know a few mothers whose daughters have had a stella and play with it well into their childhoods. She comes with outfits and shoes and stuff and her whole body is soft.

The Cabbage patch doll would be my next choice. Good luck!!
