Pregnant after IF

PNPR: Extremely Dry Skin

So, this popped up in the last month so it could be PR or not but the area around my eyes have become extremely dry and scaly. It started with the under eye area(where tears would fall) and has since moved all the way around my eyes, including my eye lids(so weird!)

I am using really mild cleanser(cetaphil), an alcohol free toner and a Bert's bees moisturizer and this regimen has always worked well for me in the past. My skin issues have always been bc of oil, not dryness, so this is a strange new development.

Nothing seems to be working, makeup only accentuates the dry skin flaking off :( anyone have any advice? I am just at a loss as to how to fix this!

Re: PNPR: Extremely Dry Skin

  • Other then finding a good moisturizer I don't have any other advice but if you want your makeup to cover it buy a makeup primer. Make sure your skin feels like your fingers are just sliding off but a little goes a long way and it will create a layer between your skin and your makeup giving your a more flawless look. Also I would buy a skin around the eyes treatment you can put on before the makeup primer and then the primer and then the liquid makeup and a powder to finish it off. This is my daily routine for my eyes. Hope it helps!

  • I do get very dry skin when pregnant and treat it with colloidal oatmeal body lotion -- but I wouldn't put that near your eyes.  The scaliness makes me wonder if it's eczema -- I get it on my eyelids occasionally and treat it with hydrocortisone, but I'm not sure if that's pregnancy-approved.

  • I started getting really dry skin on the top inner corners of my eye lids near my nose recently. It is white and looks like its peeling. My cheeks have also gotten very dry and red. I am usually an oily T zone person and rarely have dry skin issues. I am not sure whether it's pregnancy related or due to my newish soap or eye makeup remover. I also noticed that I have tons of crusties in those corners of my eyes when I wake up in the morning. Not sure if they are related. All of it has been going on for about 2-3 weeks.
I plan to switch products to see if that helps. I am using Dr. Bronner's baby mild bar soap on my whole body so will probably go back to cetaphil on my face. I also switched to Target brand eye makeup remover but I think the neutrogena stuff I used to use had a built in moisturizer and this doesn't. I have been using Cetaphil spf 15 moisturizer for ages so no changes there. Hope you get it all worked out!

My dermatologist recommended Bio Oil when I was dealing wit really dry skin. I was hesitant because I had bad acne that oil seemed counterproductive. It's all natural oil to calm the skin. It helped a lot. My skin was so chapped that even a slight breeze would hurt. Bio Oil is safe to use during pregnancy. In fact I've used it with both pregnancies to help with my itchy stomach.

Edit: Spelling. I can't type on my iPad.

  • Have you tried using a humidifier in your bedroom at night? It may help with the winter dryness overall. Some years I get so dry that my eyelids hurt and turn pink/red, so we installed a whole house humidifier system onto our forced air and it really makes a difference.

  • I'm having the same problem and nothing is helping. We have a humidifier but it's SO dry here in the cold winter.

I think it's PG related. I even have a super dry scalp (so sessy) right now too.

I've been trying moisturizing masks and exfoliating daily and all kinds of heavy lotions/creams but nothing works for more than a day.

    I feel you.

  • Thanks for all the tips ladies! FX I can find something that can at least minimize the issue.

@MJC1116 my BMB was just talking about bio oil for skin around the belly, I will check it out and see if it does anything for the face. If not, I can always just use it on my belly.

@whoberry sounds like we have the same issue. If I find something that works I will pass it along to you.

  • I don't have this exact problem, but my lips have been super chapped and I think that it is pregnancy related, so yours more than likely is, too.  Maybe ask your derm if there's anything that's safe to use.  I also like the suggestions of using a humidifier, especially in the winter months.  We started doing this and it's helped a lot, more with dry/sore throats, but just keeping everything from being so dry in general, too.  Good luck, hopefully you can find something that works!
