PP joint pain

Since the sixth month of pregnancy, I've had the most severe ache in my joints- especially my hips, back, neck and feet. I have attributed this to the weight gain (I am much too heavy right now, 12 weeks post partum). Dr Google says it's most likely just hormones, but I'm really getting worried something is wrong. It makes it hard to move around and lose the weight! The pain is more like a body ache than anything... Like that feeling before you get a fever. Am I just a fatty? Is anyone else feeling more beat up than usual? I realize exhaustion could be a part of this, but I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing what I'm describing.

ETA: I'm probably going to call my doctor after thanksgiving.

Re: PP joint pain

  • I think it can be due to lack of estrogen. I told my doc I felt like I had arthritis, and that's what she told me. It is getting better though slowly

  • A good chiropractic adjustment helps me a lot. I actually developed plantar fasciatis in my left foot. I blame the pregnancy weight. I do a ton of stretches now to help that. Also, I asked my Dr about my fatigue andthey ran tests. My insulin level was high. Since I've been on meds I feel much better. Closer to normal. If you're really concerned talk to your gcp. There might be something they can do.

  • My sister developed rheumatoid arthritis after her first pregnancy. Apparently the hormones during pregnancy can bring it out. Her whole body was in pain and she was exhausted all the time. Took a year to get her diagnosed. Something to consider. Hers is so bad now after having a second kid she is on disability leave from work :( just one of those things but she wouldn't trade it for her kids!
Goodluck and I hope you don't have it..but maybe do some reading in it.
  • I was just talking to MH about this tonight! I feel the same way. My hips and knees feel achy almost all the time. I described it the same way you did, like I am getting the flu. I am about 8 pounds over my regular weight right now.

I do notice it gets worse the more tired I am. My lo gets up at least 2 times per night so I am pretty exhausted.
  • Yeah, I second the foot pain. And sometimes my legs ache at night. I also attribute it to weight and being on my feet chasing two kids all day.

  • I feel achey as well since giving birth. With my first I was good I felt barely any pp pain. But with this lo my hips just ache. I seriously feel like he just came out yesterday.
And the longer I am on them the more I hurt.
I hope our pains get better for all if us
  • I have a weird thing where certain shoes and chairs will set off body aches. Like the Clarks that I've worn for two years suddenly give me a lower back ache, and my office chair (that I've had for six years) causes upper shoulder pain. Since our hip bones and everything shift and spread during pregnancy, I guess my "new" body just isn't the same as the old one. I suppose it'll just take some adjustment. (And I'm with you; I'm way too heavy for my own good right now.)

But I would give your doctor a call. It can't hurt!

  • I told my OB about the pain in my hands and fingers and he said it sounded arthritic. Now that I see some of the pp it may be hormone related?

  • Hmmmm I wonder if joint problems from pregnancy is the reason for my thumb so hard to bend at night! I have to use my other hand to bend it, it gets stuck. It is so uncomfortable. It hurts at the joint too.

I have left hand pain when I wake up in the morning. It is hard to bend my fingers. I had carpal tunnel induced symptoms during pregnancy. Interesting that it might be arthritic and/or lack of estrogen related.

I have joint pain as well (I notice it in my knees when I pick up LO - maybe that is because he is a chunky monkey) and in my right ankle. I had major swelling after my c-section and I figure the stiffness in my ankle might be left over from that.

I am overweight too so I hear you, mommabmb. I think our bodies just need to adjust after having babies and it is going to take awhile. As always, there is nothing wrong with getting it checked out.

  • Just to follow up... My doc sent me for labs to test for RA as well as hormone levels. I'll let you know!

  • I get bad pains in my feet, ecspecially in the morning. I can't walk.. I'll limp for about 5 minutes and it will go away, my knees are the same.

Hopefully they figure out what it is, and it'll be a quick fix for you :)
