Baby's social security card / number?

Does this happen automatically or is there something I'm supposed to do like go down to the social security office and apply for a number for baby? ?We just got the official birth certificate in the mail and it made me think about this...

    I applied at the hospital when we filled out the forms for the birth certificate.  It took a really long time to get though but finally came in the mail.  Not sure how to do it not at the hospital but I'm sure you could do it at the ss office.

    Ditto pp.  There was a box to check on the application for the birth certificate at the hospital.  We ended up getting the ss card about a month later.

    ditto pp.  It was part of getting the birth certificate for us and we just got her card last week (when she was 6 weeks old).  Side note:  It was very exciting to get "official" mail with her name on it!

    They asked us in the hospital if we wanted to apply right away for a SS card, and told us that if we did to mark a box on the birth certificate application.

    We got his SS card in the mail this past week.  Like Berty said, it was fun for him to her "official" mail with his name on it.

    ditto pp, but ours took every bit of 10-11 weeks to come in the mail.  the time depends on your state

    I am guessing through the paperwork dh filled out at the hospital bc we got theirs a few weeks after coming home.

    when we filled out birth cert the county sent the info to the fed gov. got it last week!
