Late Term and Child Loss

Stillbirth Certificate

We received Colton's stillbirth certificate in the mail today and it was such an affirming thing to see it on official paperwork from the state. It seems like such a given that you get a birth certificate for your child, that it really upset me when nothing was said at the hospital or funeral home or anything, but I am so pleased that we got something for him. It looks very similar to DS1's birth certificate, which I appreciate, and I will treasure it as I do his photos and clothes and everything else.

Me: 32 DH: 33  High School Sweethearts  Married 5/28/2005
DS1 born 6/5/10 at 40 weeks via emergency c-section due to fetal distress and IUGR caused by placental insufficiency
DS2 born still 8/28/13 at 32 weeks via emergency c-section due to a complete placental abruption - cause unknown
Baby #3 on the way, EDD 2/29/16.  Originally twins, but we said goodbye to Baby B at 8 weeks.

Re: Stillbirth Certificate

  • I am happy that you received it. Here in VA they don't recognize stillbirths as births but we can get a certificate of birth-stillbirth. My DH has been working on that and hoping we get that soon. It will give a sense that Olivia was here. I am glad that you have Colton's.

  • We got one for Patricia as well. Hate that we had to send her death certificate in to get her birth certificate :-(.

Our Angel Patricia born sleeping 3/30/12 at 31 weeks
Our Fighter Anna born early 1/8/13 at 26 weeks
Hoping to bring home #3 due 9/9/15
  • I'm glad you were able to get that.  Here in Michigan we don't have anything like that.  I had to sign a few things, but we never got an official certificate of any kind and the nurse explained that we don't really have anything for stillbirths, like a death certificate since she wasn't first born alive.

We don't have anything like that here, either...we received certificates of stillbirth for Devon, which broke my heart. I can't even look at it because it just makes me so sad. Oklahoma does have commemorative birth certificates for stillbirths, though, that are really pretty. I'm going to order one soon so I can hang it with his pictures.

I'm so glad you were able to get that!

We haven't applied for a birth certificate for Alice, but we did get a death certificate because we needed it for insurance purposes. Seeing her death certificate and cause of death "extreme prematurity" was so incredibly painful. A loss mom I know on another group ordered a birth certificate for her daughter and when she got it she said it was stamped in red across it "DECEASED". That is my hesitation in ordering one for Alice, I already have a death certificate and I don't want her birth certificate to be "ruined" by something like that. We're in Oregon and this other loss mom was in Illinois I believe so I don't even know if Oregon would do that.

  • I am so glad you received it and are happy with it. I am hesitant to order one. @PerkyErky- a mom in my loss group here in PA had the same experience with a giant stamp across her son 'a certificate. I don't want to go through that, and have been holding off for that reason.

  • @PerkyErky @kz's_girlygirl - I had that same fear about the certificate being marked in some way, but I decided I wouldn't know unless I requested it, and just braced myself when I opened the envelope. Fortunately, it is a very nice certificate, very similar to DS1's birth certificate and our marriage certificate. It does say it wasn't a live birth, but it is very discreet

  • @PerkyErky - oh no, that would be terrible to see on the certificate.  I know here in Georgia there are two separate ones that you receive - one is indeed a "Fetal Death Certificate" and the other is a "Certificate of Birth Resulting in a Stillbirth."  I guess the second is to avoid having the mention of the baby being deceased on the form.
