CPT: If you had your navel pierced at some point ...

So this poll arises after my informal survey of my 6 girlfriends who are all pregnant at the same time as this group. Those who had navel pierces pre-pregnancy do not have popped belly buttons, and those who did not have piercings have popped belly buttons. The length of time from piercing does not seem to matter (mine came out 7 years ago now, but I still have a mark and am stretched flat, not popped). I'm curious if this is just a coincidence or if there actually might be something to it - remember, only answer the first three options if you have ever had your navel pierced.

  • I took my piercing out years ago and totally regret getting it.  But after having DS, it really annoys me how it looks after pregnancy because the skin between the holes was all stretched out and when my stomach shrunk back, the skin there is more wrinkly and didn't snap back as well.  But I don't think they made the holes far enough apart when it was done as well, so the piece of skin in between is pretty narrow.  Don't know if this is a common problem...

  • Mine looks really weird now too. I took my piercing out years ago and now with my pregnant belly I look like I have 3 belly buttons  :((

This! My belly button is also really deep so it was a real innie until a couple weeks ago. I'm afraid to see what it's going to look like post birth now.

  • The weird thing is that the piercing hole that used to be on the underside of my belly button is now above my belly button 'crevice' (haha) in addition to the other hole... so now both piercing holes are visible. Did that even make sense? I don't know how to explain it better!
But my belly button is definitely still a deep innie! Interesting theory!

  • Mine is flat for the most part.  A tiny bit of it protrudes.  The piercing scar does look funny, especially since above it are the only two stretch marks I got on my belly last pregnancy and they look like little alien antennae coming out from the top.

GAHHHHH add me to this club! Mine wasn't pierced before the first time I was pregnant so I never dealt with this. I took mine out like 3 weeks after my BFP. It's definitely weird and stretchy looking and I am waiting to see what it looks like later. :(

And also, I have this weird thing where every time there's a thread about belly buttons, I hope people start posting pictures because I want to know if mine is normal or not. You can shame me out of the board if you want.

  • So what I've taken away from this post is that the majority of people who have pierced their belly button (i.e. 90%) have not popped.  But of course, I did not include a control group so I have no idea what the proportion looks like for those who did not pierce their belly buttons.  Hmph.  Wonder if I can edit...

Also, @blondie10m I feel you - when my stomach finally recovered from my first pregnancy, all the skin basically went back to normal EXCEPT my belly button which still remained wrinkly and sad.  And I'm guessing it will be wrinklier and sadder after this LO.  Yet another instance where I really should have listened to my mother...

@vstevens THIS IS MY SAME REACTION. I hate how it looks now and if I had known and could re-do that day again I'd never get it done.

  • I'm gonna be the weirdo here but I had mine pierced at 17, stop wearing at like 23, pregnant with DS at age 25 and it looks completely the same. No weird stretching or anything, my belly skin looks exactly the same as pre pregnancy. That being said I have serious stretchmarks on my butt, inner thighs, and a like 4 on each of my sides:) So no two pieces in my future either!
  • My scar from the ring also looks really weird, and I took my piercing out probably around 7 years ago.  My belly button has not popped, but I also have a pretty deep belly button.  But this is really interesting to see the results!

Maybe people with deeper belly buttons are more likely to get them pierced??

  • Mine looks utterly ridiculous. Took the ring out the day after my BFP. It's so stretched out, and the entire area is completely red and shiny (and has been since I started showing). My only two stretch marks expand out of the top part of the piercing. I feel that, had I never pierced my belly button, I would have made it stretch mark free.

  • @ShannahBee yes! makes total sense. I've had my piercing out for years now, but can see both sides of the scar--weird! Still not popped out entirely, though its pretty flat.
  • I took my belly button ring out the day I got my BFP with DS1.  My scar looked terrible with him and has gotten so much better over the years.  It looks somewhat normal now.

Oh, and my belly button popped with all 4 kids.

When you have monster babies, there is no where else for your belly button to go BUT out. ;)

  • My piercing has a ton of scaring and stretch marks. My belly button is flat but just the top part by where my piercing was has popped out.

  • @vstevens -- interesting observation. I took mine out 10 years ago, and I've noticed that the top part is still in but the bottom part is starting to pop out. Just a little.
  • @megngregk I think that you may be right about your piercing causing your stretch marks. My sister had hers pierced and ended up with four stretch marks- coming out from her belly button like an X. Her ob told her that since scar tissue (from the piercing hole) doesn't stretch as well, the skin around it had to stretch more to compensate for it. Hence the marks.

  • It looks like the hole is a little bigger. The day we got our bfp, DH made me take it out. Lol

  • I got my navel pierced when I was 16 and took it out in January when we started TTC. So far, my belly button has stretched, but nothing else has changed. I keep waiting for the "pop," but nothing so far.

  • I got pierced for my 16th birthday and just took it out at 20 weeks because the u/s tech told me I had to for my a/s (so about 10 weeks ago, right around my 30th birthday).  I'm still a deep innie, but the scar has stretched out a little bit and has that shiny red scar look to it.

Things the guy at the tattoo parlor where I had mine done failed to warn me about at the tender age of 15...

  • I took mine out around 13 weeks (I think) and so far it looks okay.  My belly button is still an innie by a bit and the hole is definitely stretched just like the skin around it but no stretch marks or red shininess.  I still have 9-10 more weeks to go though so we shall see what the final result is.

  • I guess I'm the SS here... I still have my belly ring in (I bought one of those flexible maternity ones) and my belly button popped out around 24 weeks. The skin is definitely thinner where the ring goes through but it's not uncomfortable and it still looks pretty normal, no redness and no stretch marks on the belly (knock on wood) just on my hips. No idea what it will do post baby though!

  • I had my belly button pierced when I got pregnant with DD #1. When I was about 3-4 months pregnant I was told by a ton of friends that I should take it out so I did. When I was 7 months pregnant my belly button popped like the turkey timer!

My belly button has not popped since though! Which is soooo weird to me! That was the only pregnancy it popped and now the closest it's gotten to popping with my other pregnancies is flat as a pancake but not at the popping stage.

  • My bottom hole from the percing is completely closed and the top hole is still there but it doesn't look strange or stretched. It looks just like my ear piercing when no earring is in there... Didn't give it much thought until this post.

Also, @vstevens to throw more funkiness into the hypothesis, I did not have mine pierced before the first time I got pregnant and it never popped so I think I'm just not a "popper." I don't think my piercing had any influence on anything except how weird my belly button looks now. Also...it itches right now and you're welcome for sharing.
