I think preeclampsia is giving me preeclampsia

Ugh I am so over this shenanigans! I have been having pre-e symptoms for weeks and I would tell my doctors but my BP was always my normal low reading (about 110/65 on average)so they thought I was "misinterpreting the symptoms." Well Friday they caught me while symptoms were still going on and guess what 147/98. So now I am on pre-e watch and every little thing that feels off I want to freak out and run to get my BP checked. Like I have a head ache right now, it could be pre-e or the fact that I got 5 hours of sleep and I am at work right now.

I know if I go to L&D again it will just be the same old thing- get monitored for a few hours and then sent home. I just want to shake them and say "you realize this is just making me more anxious and sending my BP up again so I will just be back here over and over until I have this baby." I know it's not good to have her early and they plan on inducing at 39 weeks which is next Thursday but I don't think I can take another week of this without going crazy! How are other pre-e moms dealing with this?

Can you cut down at work, maybe do half days for the next week?
I can but I don't really want to. I only get 6 full pay weeks and we can't afford for me to go on STD because I will only get 50% pay so I want to keep as much time as I can to spend with her once she gets here. They won't let me do 1/2 days because "if you need 1/2 days you should just go out on leave."

  • You asked for advice, so ready or not, here it comes. I've been dealing with diagnosed preeclampsia for nearly 11 weeks now and also had preeclampsia with my last pregnancy. Since you've not been dx with preeclampsia, I'm assuming your urine protein is below the threshold of concern and they've not measured more than one elevated Bp. If you're worried, purchase a reliable Bp monitor and check a few times a day. The key is consistency. You can run (waddle) up a flight of stairs and run your Bp up, so make sure you've been seated for about 10 minutes before checking it. Disclaimer: I'm just relaying the recommendation given to me by my MFM doc and every situation is different. If I get a reading with either # higher than 140/90, force myself to sit still and relax for another 10 minutes then check again. If I get 3 elevated readings, call the doc. A single reading of either # greater than 160/100 merits a call to the doc while you lay down on your side and repeat bp checks. It's a really good thing that your #'s have been good as they don't tend to return to normal if the increase is related to preeclampsia.

You were a little vague about your symptoms, so I'll go with the most common symptoms. Headaches: I've been told to take tylenol to see if it is a normal headache (and benadryl since i have some serious sinus headaches sometimes). I've also experienced a few tension headaches because I've got a giant watermelon of a belly (base of skull that are helped with massage). Swelling: Hand/foot/leg swelling is a sign of pregnancy, not preeclampsia. Facial swelling is associated with preeclampsia, but not diagnostic. The doc would need to go by other diagnostic criteria. Altered reflexes: you can't check your own reflexes. It's like trying to tickle yourself. Leave it to the doc. Vision changes: report these to your doc as some vision changes are associated with normal pregnancy and some are associated with preeclampsia.

You may need to follow the middle road of staying home til baby comes. It seems unreasonable to want to either have the baby NOW, or continue working full time. As bad as my preeclampsia is, my docs and I have done everything possible to eke out every possible day gestating. It's better for our babies to bake fully even if it's inconvenient for us to take time off work. I speak from experience of not working for 11 weeks with NO pay at all. Hang in there, mama.
