If we are doing a longer drive, I pick up some board books from the library and let her look at them. She loves seeing pictures of animals especially. I will sit in the back with her and help her practice the words. The library is great because we can always get a new book that she hasn't seen before.
He watches Curious George on the Kindle if the drive is over 20 mins or so. It's like crack to him these days.
If I don't have the Kindle on, he usually is fine just looking out the window (but still has to have his paci) or playing with a demo phone my friend got him that works at Verizon.
ETA: I just want to note that he used to be a MESS in his car seat fussing and crying all the time and the Kindle helped so much! It even helped him just learn to sit still for a while and now he is 100x better even when its not on.
Cal loooooves music, so we have a bunch of music toys that he plays with - otherwise he just tries to rip off his shoes and socks, or amuses himself in the mirror.
Lots of books. We have a VTech book that sings songs and nursery rhymes - that's a great car toy. Also we have these little shape shakers from Gymboree and I will stick them in her little purse and she will shake it/take them out etc.
Since she is still in her infant seat, we have the toy bar thingy that keeps her busy and a mirror. She loves music, so the radio usually suffices. I can't wait for her to be forward facing, so we can try out the tv in the new car!
I put more books in this morning and that seemed to do the trick. We drive about an hour roundtrip each day and he gets bored quickly. I think we may be getting a portable DVD player or cheapy tablet for Christmas.
