We like this name but wonder if he is called Max for short by people (he eventually will) it's the #1 dog name... stupid for me to worry over? Do you know any kids named Max?
I personally know a 16 yr old Maxwell and a 4 month old Maxwell. Both go by Max most of the time. The 16 yr old is my cousin... If we ever call him by his full name it's usually for fun in a cutesy or "oh you're on trouble" kind of way.
I love Maxwell with nn Max!
We had a dog Max growing up, and that still doesn't make me think "dog" when I hear it.
Max is not a dog name. It is a human name people sometimes use on dogs.
Max is #105
Maxwell is #116
Maximus is #206
Maxim is #683
Maximo is #920
...all for humans
All of this. I know a woman who fell in love with the name Sadie and then was talked out of it because someone told her it was a dogs name only. She is having a boy this time but she regrets not using it before and now having her last child and not being able to use it at all.

My personal association with Maxwell is he was the most difficult student I've ever had - behavior-wise. That is what I think of every time I hear the name so couldn't even consider it. But if you don't have any poor associations with the name, go for it! I did call him Max on occasion but all his classmates called him Maxwell.
There's nothing wrong with the name Maxwell. I also don't really understand the concern around it being the #1 dog name - how many people are going to make the association? Max/Maxwell is legit.
@alyssaames - I would associate Sadie with a cow, not necessarily a dog - haha.
I'm a fan. It's a family name for us, so it gets bonus points. I have a cousin who named his son Maxwell. I'm pretty sure he goes by Max for the most part.
I've never gotten a dog name connection with this (though I may be biased).
