No more pacifier?

At DD's 15 month check up today the doc told us to start weaning her off her pacifier.

She only uses it at naps and nighttime. But he saw some alignment issues and said we should possibly talk to a dentist (which we plan to do after the holidays).

What tips/tricks have you used to ditch that pacifier?

ugh, I am so not looking forward to this day. Dr. didn't say anything about DD still having a paci for naps and night time at her 15 month appointment but I am sure he will at 18 month appointment. I will be following this post.

I'm dreading this with DS!!

When we weaned DD, I eliminated it at naps first. Then a few days later I eliminated it at nighttime.

we tried at nap today. total fail.

she whined for 10 mins and I went in a rocked her and she kept looking for it.

I'm dreading this too :-( DS will be 17 months tomorrow and while he used to only use it for sleeping, since starting daycare a few days a week in the fall and having a rough transition he uses it a lot more now. He'll actually walk around all sad saying "ah-aye-uh" which is his jibberish for pacifier. So so so dreading cutting it out!!

Ugh. I'm dreading this too. DS doesn't have a lovey. His pacifiers are the only thing that comforts him right now so I don't want to take that away. When is a good age to wean a child? DS is almost 15 months.

I'm just coming to terms that she will have braces one day- no biggie.

My doc made it sound like it would be so easy to break but it's her one constant thing she's had.

I am going to try to wait until she understands more.

My oldest had his paci for naps and nighttime sleep until he was 2.5 and that was with the blessing of a pediatric dentist. He wasn't at all concerned and said that almost all kids (even those who don't use a pacifier) have an overbite that corrects itself around school age. He told us that if he still had it when he turned 3 then we would need to force the issue but that he wasn't concerned at 2.5.

Around 2.5, I gave him his paci for nap and he called me back in his room and handed it to me with a hole bitten in the end. I threw it away and gave him another one and told him we only had 2 more left. When I got him up, there was a hole in that one. For bed that night, he went to bed with it but bit a hole in it when he woke up in the morning. We were down to 1. I gave it to him at nap and he looked right at me, bit a hole in it end of it and said "all done". He laid down and went to sleep. That was the last time he really napped but he was done with the paci and never asked for it again.

We live in a different area and are seeing a different pediatric dentist and when I asked him about DS2 and his paci use, he basically said the same thing as our old dentist so I'm not worried about it at this point. DS2 has never been a good sleeper and I don't really want to mess with his sleep at the moment.

DD will be a year old next week, but we're going to be doing a lot of traveling back and forth to our families' homes over the next few weeks. She only uses it for car rides, nap, and bedtime at this point. We're going to work on dropping it for naps between Christmas and New Years (DH will be on Christmas break, so at least daycare won't be totally responsible for it...), and then dropping it at night immediately after that. I'm hoping it'll be out of our lives by the first week of January

My LO has been paci free for a week now! Naps were a bit rough but night time was a breeze. I am so proud of him!
