I didn't read the whole article.. but skimmed it.. for as long as I can
remember, Black Friday shopping was a "family" thing for me.. After
Thanksgiving dinner, my Mom and my sisters and I would sit around our
table with our ads and our notebooks and our coupons and hash out a game
plan.. we'd have our lists written, our agenda marked, etc.. then, we'd
wake up and go out shopping at 4 or 5am Friday morning.. it was a
really fun time. We'd do almost all our Christmas shopping in one day,
together.
However. Over the past 3 years.. the earlier open
times have become more and more annoying. if we were to go out when
stores open, we'd no longer have that time to unwind after dinner then
sit around and make our lists.. get a few hours of sleep and head out..
last year, we still did our dinner and made our lists and just went out
around 10-11pm (despite stores opening before 8).. the atmosphere was SO
different. when the stores opened at 4 or 5am, the crowd was all
shoppers.. people there for a reason.. with the stores opening so early,
there were a lot of young kids/teens just "hanging out" and not there
to shop.. it was a headache.
I don't fault the commercialization
of the Holidays.. like I said, Holiday Shopping was always a "family"
thing for me growing up.. I have a lot of positive memories surrounding
it.. but I think this year I'm likely not going to go out.. I'm not
willing to go at 6pm. I'm not willing to go at 8pm. It was annoying
enough going out at 10-11pm last year.. the internet may win me over
this time..!
I am not a big Black Friday person, though. I can't handle the crowds, and have never gotten that GREAT deal that makes it worth losing my sanity over.
I can't stand him but agree with that piece 100%. I hate everything about retailers being open Thanksgiving Day. It's a sad statement on the values of our society and screams "no holidays for poor people" to me since it's not the well off average college-educated white collar worker who has to stand behind a register instead of spending the day with their family.
I am typically not a fan of him but I agree with him on the main point of this article. Retailers can open up whenever they want on Friday but keep Thanksgiving a holiday.

Well, I scanned, but I agree on this one. It's Thanksgiving, not the day of Gluttony and shopping. Somewhere along the way something got all f-ed up in our society and I don't like it.
He's usually a tool, but I have to agree with him. I think it is truly sad and discouraging that stores are opening on Thanksgiving. There is just no need for it. I love a good deal, but you couldn't pay me money to be part of Black Friday shopping. I roll my eyes at people who "need" to get to the stores on Thanksgiving. I fall into the trap too, but I hate the need for more and more stuff.
So I don't know who this guy really is. Why should I dislike him? This opinion piece is great.
This post is fantastic, but his general attitude is very paternalistic and misogynistic. He feels moms are wrong to work and Christianity is critical to living a good life.
