WWYD IUI/IVF related ETA

edited November 2013 in Secondary IF
So, this natural cycle is probably a bust and we could do clomid IUI this next cycle. Our golden month for getting KU haha, that's when I got KU with DD and m/c. So I kind of want to stack the odds. I also don't want to do cycles in the winter months because its an hour drive each way. So I want to try this IUI and if doesn't work keep trying on our own and consider IVF in the spring months.

DH is on the fence, wants to keep trying on our own (or try another IUI if I want to). But as you see this month, he didn't exactly cooperate! He just wants it to 'happen' but at this point, we both agree it probably will not unfortunately.

Re: WWYD IUI/IVF related ETA

  • Well I think it depends on how much of the testing you have done for IVF.  If all the testing is done, I would try the IUI, and then move to IVF when you are ready.  If not, it seemed to take forever for the testing and all the 'stuff' they needed before we could actually start.  My clinic is an hour from my house, but close to work. So it balances.

  • Oh and I am sorry it is a bust... Is it for sure or you just 'know' it is?

  • Idk? If your H isn't on board with treatment cycles yet, I think I'd go with that? Sounds like you guys need to hash this out together.

  • I vote go for the IUI. Sounds like TI might be getting to your DH and IUI might actually take the pressure off. I always felt more stressed trying on our own than when I did my IUIs but I know some people feel the opposite. Just throwing that out there.

    Good Luck!

  • I don't want it to seem like DH isn't 'on board' I know he is but hates the clinical aspect, really who likes it?

I think TI is a drag and the IUI does take the pressure off.

I don't feel ready for IVF yet, I don't think.

I see what you mean. You can always do IUI + TI so it's not "so clinical" that's what they had me do anyway- but some places just do B2B IUIs. I don't blame you for wanting to put off IVF, that is some serious overwhelming shizz.

Agreed it is overwhelming... if you aren't ready, go with what you feel most comfortable with.  However, the IVF process isn't a horrific as it is sometimes portrayed.  The waiting, and possible outcomes are the hardest.  But the shots, and stuff really aren't that bad.  I guess I pushed it because I feel we waited to long to figure stuff out, but we obviously didn't have an option for IUI.  I want all of us to get off this board. (Except I don't, cuz I dig you all, but I do.)

Exactly. I appreciate you input about the IVF not being so bad. I felt that way about the IUI, there was anxiety leading up but not bad while doing it. Shots don't bother me.

The other thing is with the flucuation in hormones I imaging I will have with more meds, I worry about how I will feel lupus wise.  So getting more aggressive does worry me a bit but I have been told by my rheumy to proceed.

OMG I totally forgot you have lupus. I haven't been 'classified' as having it, but what they are calling mine is 'undifferentiated connective disease'. I was taking all kinds of meds for it but went off everything when I got pregnant earlier this year, and I haven't gone back on them, mostly because my RE wanted me off of everything.  My RE was worried how I was going to react and they went aggressive on me, because of DOR.  And to be honest I did ok.  Tired, but that is nothing new.

    That is really interesting.

I was taking Plaquenil since last October when the flares were longer than 2-3 days.  I came off of it this summer at the request of my RE. I feel good, no real flares since. But I think its partly due to some lifestyle change (accounting for having it) and more walking as exercise.

I have a very good egg supply and DH has a good sperm count and they gave us a 75-80% chance of IVF success, for us its more of an issue of having the tubal problems

I took Plaquenil too, and I took something for my lungs, the name is escaping me, because of the pluerisy I have in my lungs.  My chest will hurt once in awhile, and my joints hurt, and I am tired. But other than that I am ok.  And I understand the tubal stuff too.
Ugh I am so sorry... I know those frustrations.  Well go for another IUI, you still have IVF as an option, but do what you feel is best.

  • It's a very personal decision, and if you don't feel ready, I'd say to go with your gut. We were perfect candidates for IUI (our dx is unexplained and I got pregnant really easily both times we were successful) however, we opted for  IVF. This was because the success rates are so much higher and I thought failed IUI's would waste time and take an emotional tole. Though injecting myself with an insane amount of hormones and dealing with the side effects was not fun at all, I'm happy that I made the decision I made. Best of luck and if you have any specific questions about IVF, feel free to ask (not that I'm a pro, but it's all fresh in my head now).

  • I'd probably go with your plan of IUI now, and if it didn't work trying on your own for a few months before moving onto IVF. I'm just starting to wrap my head around/accept that IVF will be in our near-ish future and it is a lot to process. None of these decisions are easy.

Two DDs 10/08 and 08/10, no primary IF
    TTC #3 since 10/2011 - dx unexplained/weak ovulation
     3 BFN clomid + TI cycles, 5 BFN clomid/gonal f IUIs, 1 mmc IUI
2/19/2014 IVF #1 Unexpected low E2 (oversuppressed) -> increased to max doses = 3 or 4 follicles, converting to IUI
BFFP Saw 1 beautiful heartbeat at 6w6d, follow up u/s at 9w showed mmc. Eff this.
    NTNP 5/2014-9/2014, OPKs and TI 10/2014 - 1/2015.
RPL testing all normal, AFC, AMH, and FSH all normal.
    IVF 1.2 1/22/2014 natural cycle start, AFC 28, 300 gonal f/150menopur.
ER 2/3/15 14R 8M 3F w/ICSI Day 5 transfer on 2/8/15 of one "Grade A+" blast and have TWO frosties!

I am so glad I know you! Even though we are both on this cruddy journey it helps to know others with autoimmune issues.
