Thanksgiving - GTKY

I'm super excited for the holidays this year, even more so because I have a cute baby to show off and celebrate with! So... What are your plans for Thanksgiving? What's your favorite Thanksgiving dish? Do you have any special family traditions? GO!

Re: Thanksgiving - GTKY

  • We're road tripping to Dallas (from Des Moines) so it'll be quite the adventure with a 2 month old. Wish us luck :) I'm excited to take advantage of my maternity leave to get in some travel time. And I'm even more excited to hang out with my aunt and cousins whom I rarely see now that they have moved to Texas.

We normally spend Thanksgiving in Omaha with my in-laws. Every year after dinner, we head downtown for a tree lighting ceremony. It's always so freaking cold to stand outside and wait but once the lights turn on, the streets become so magical and cozy. The hot toddy's usually help warm us up, too.

And my favorite dish is anything sweet potatoes. I'm trying out a new cocktail recipe for a cider sangria... so that might just become my new favorite Thanksgiving drink!

Happy holidays, everyone! Stay safe! And those of you celebrating with your in-laws, stay sane. :)

  • We have three families, so lots of plans... brunch with FIL/SMIL on Thursday morning, the rest of the day with my parents for dinner, then Friday dinner with MIL/SFIL. Should be fun! I'm really excited to have a kiddo, too, mostly because I got him a REALLY cute Thanksgiving outfit and turkey hat. :)

My favorite Thanksgiving dish... hmm, maybe the homemade rolls! Yum! Or the turkey :) My mom's homemade cranberry sauce is pretty bomb, too. I'm kind of a weird one because I don't really overeat at Thanksgiving. I'm kind of a picky eater and I don't like green bean casserole, stuffing, or the sweet potatoes my mom makes (she uses the canned kind). And I don't like pie. Haha I fail at being an American on Thanksgiving.

Special traditions: eating cheese and crackers and chips and dips and other snacks while watching the Macy's parade, naps after dinner, board games with my family. We didn't live near family growing up so our special thing was to go see a movie in theaters Thanksgiving night (it was the only time of year we did it so it was a really big deal). My parents were talking about doing that again for fun, but I think my brother and I talked them out of it, because they wanted to go see the new kids movie which looks kind of dumb to us, especially if we're paying over $10 to see it.
I don't really know if DH's families have any specific traditions... I don't think I remember any.

  • As much as I love the Holidays, it's so much running around for us it's hard to enjoy. For thanksgiving we will go to my great grandma's house hang out and eat, then head over to DHs grandmas for another meal. Then we usually go to his aunt's house and eat/drink and sift through all the Black Friday ads.

  • We're going to my hubby's family in Philly 2 hours away. I love love love Thanksgiving. Since I was raised abroad I always just saw it in the movies and just wanted to experience it so much. So since now i can, I always go all out and make a gazillion dishes. My MIL is a pretty bad cook and she only does the basics so I usually bring 3-5 dishes because i want it to be extra special. I'm Greek and food is big where I come from (and my mom is an excellent cook) so I love it.

We are also doing a 5k in the AM - although I'm super slow now post baby I'm still going to try and finish. I started this tradition 3 yrs ago and every year our group gets bigger - my husband, SIL, her fiance, FIL, my cousin, my husband's neighbors.

And of course it's so extra special this year because it's Zoe's first Thanksgiving. I planned all her outfits already :)

    Can you tell I'm excited?
  • It's just going to be the four of us this year. My parents are going out of town with friends and my in-laws are having dinner at their house with DH's aunt. Due to major drama with my BIL we will not be going there (ever).

We normally go and run the Turkey Trot 5K that morning, but I don't know about doing it with a double jogging stroller (Elliot is too small) and we won't have anyone here to leave the kids with. I'm really sad about missing it.

  • We are driving to my parents' house in Oklahoma.  My older brother and his wife and 4 kids will be there.  So will my grandparents, and maybe a cousin and his gf who also have a S13 baby!  Lots of family time, which I love because I live in Missouri and don't get to see my family very often :)

  • We alternate each year between my side and DH's side. This year we are going to my Mom's house :) which is only 20 minutes away.

I'm just looking forward to my Mom's stuffing recipe with turkey and mashed potatoes. That's all.

  • We are going to my mom's husband's cousin's house for lunch so his family can meet Emory. (I've never met any of them but my mom begged us to come). For dinner we are going to my SIL and BIL's house which is about an hour away. It's going to be a long day but I think it should be ok. My favorite dishes are mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce. Yummmm. No real traditions here but we are planning on decorating for Christmas on Friday!

We don't have any traditions here except going Black Friday shopping. This year, my in laws are coming down again which I'm pretty excited about. I'm looking most forward to mashed potatoes and MIL's homemade apple pie.
Have fun and good luck Black Friday shopping. Play nice ;)
  • Sophie & I will be spending half the day working at the flower shop. Then we will be going to my mom's house for dinner. DH will be at work at the firehouse all day so we won't be getting to spend her first thanksgiving with him.

Ummm - can the whole meal be my favorite dish!? I love thanksgiving, so the order of importance on the dishes are:
Stuffing, mashed potatoes & corn, turkey - all of them covered in gravy!

o special traditions - when my grandma was still alive after dinner we would always drive downtown Chicago to see the lights on the magnificent mile. I miss that :(

  • Our thanksgiving was in October (canadian). My brother, SIL and their 5 mo daughter were in town from across the country and my mom made an amazing meal for all of us and our closest childhood friends. The whole meal was ridiculously good but special props went it the rockaberry apple pie and the pumpkin pie. The stuffing was the stuff dreams are made of. Mmmm. Can we have two thanksgivings???
  • Our family actually rents a party hall for Thanksgiving since we have outgrown everyone's house. This year there will be 60 of us! My dad is one of ten and they all had lots of kids and now we are starting to have kids and well, there are just a lot of us :) We have a 5 course Italian meal with some turkey thrown in. We drink...a lot, dance, hang out, and just enjoy each other. Then my sisters and cousins and I go out for black Friday shopping. I love Thanksgiving!

  • We are military and can't afford to travel home for both thanksgiving and Christmas so we are staying in town and having a Friendsgiving with some other families on base. We are each bringing our favorite sides- mine being my moms corn soufflé and homemade mini pumpkin pies. We also love the tradition of watching the Macys Thanksgving Day Parade while we cook so I always look forward to that.

  • We are heading to my in-laws' house for thanksgiving with all of DH's family. We've mostly done this the last few years. We stop by my mom's family's thanksgiving celebration on the way home for dessert and visiting. I used to always see a movie with my dad that night, but now he works the day after (lame! he owns his own business, he should stop that haha) and I have a wee one to figure out care for if we would go. My favorite food is by far the ambrosia salad and my MIL's grape salad recipe.
  • We are going to my sister's house for Thanksgiving and then MIL/FIL's the day after for leftovers. My favorite dish is either MH's sweet potato casserole or my sister's cajun fried turkey. Sooooo yummy!

We are a little nervous because my sister has the cat from hell while ours is an angel. LO is used to cuddling with a kitty and I am afraid my sister's will eat his face. I am sure it will be ok since I don't plan on letting the cat near LO unsupervised.
