Emily's lip tie

For those of you interested, this is what I was talking about in the dentist thread.

She really loves it when I do this to her face.

  • I am glad you noticed it and it can be corrected!

  • I didn't even know about these and just realized that Colin has one (though it's slight). He nursed like a champ for 11 months, so I didn't even know there was an issue! Does the dentist take care of them or someone else?

I have no idea! We just discovered it a couple weeks ago, so I haven't made any calls about it yet. Definitely want it clipped though, if it may save us from braces!

  • My DD has this. She's already been to the dentist because she tags along with big brother.

Our pedi dentist said they don't clip them anymore. My MIL was a dental hygienist and told me I needed to get it clipped so I specially asked the dentist at her last appointment. New way of thinking I guess.

Hmmm. I haven't heard this. All the reading I've done (which isn't much yet, I admit) says that's what needs to be done. I don't see any other option besides let her teeth have a giant gap, which I'm not ok with. I personally love her gap and think it's adorable, but kids are cruel, and if I can shield her from some bullying with one simple procedure then I sure as heck hope I can find a provider who'll still do it!

ETA: The pic really doesn't do it justice. Both the skin tie and the gap are HUGE, considering the size of her smile.

  • LO has this too. They called it a tight upper lip frenulum. Pedi said it's very common and they don't do anything for it anymore. He said they used to clip them but now most pedis just leave them alone. LO nursed fine, we never had any issues. It was way more noticeable when he was a new born for some reason. Good luck!
  • Bummer! I know it's common, but didn't know they don't do anything for them anymore. I am with you and would want to try to avoid braces with a clipping. Good luck and keep us posted!
