My 3 mo old daughter had issues with gassiness from the start and the Pedi said it could be reflux even though she wasn't really spitting up. She has also been congested for about 2 months and has had an actual cold or something making her very congested and snotty for 3 weeks now. They gave us baby Zantac a while ago and we tried it for about a week and it didn't seem to make a difference so I stopped. Now she doesn't seem to be as gassy (I guess she outgrew it), but her cold has gotten worse and seemed like a sinus infection over the weekend because she was sooo snotty and it was neon yellow. Her eyes were also goopy and crusty yesterday. She's a mess, poor babe! :-( I started giving her amoxicillin yesterday on top of using saline to see if that helps. She has been extremely fussy and it's getting in the way of her eating now too. She acts hungry and then takes a little bit and either pushes the bottle away or pulls off me if nursing and starts screaming. She's also been choking it on and spitting some out. I assume it's all because of the congestion.
Went back to the Dr this morning and they said it might be viral because her sinuses aren't swollen and they are still saying that reflux could be contributing to the congestion. Has anyone had a baby that had reflux without actually spitting up? Did it cause congestion? What did you do about it? The only way I could get her to take Zantac before was in a bottle because she hated the taste. I'm already not pumping enough for what she needs at daycare so can't spare a bottle for that too in the morning and at night. Thanks!

Re: Reflux without the spit up?
Our situation with DS isn't/wasn't exactly the same, but he does have relfux, only he does indeed spit
A lot haha! But I had similar congestion type issues. He didn't have a cold, but he would sound phelgmy (for lack of a better word) quite often and then it led into him being fussy when he ate and crying after he ate. We finally got a diagnosis for the reflux and the Zantac worked for him tremendously and he doesn't have that phlegmy congested sound anymore. The thing that worked best for us with the Zantac was having the pharmacy flavor it. There was one flavor approved for the meds/infants (it was grape) and he loves it. Maybe try that? DS is 11 weeks and we jsut had it flavored last week and it is def easier to get him to take it now
My LO has reflux and rarely spits up. She was very congested and had watery eyes. We were put on Zantac at about 5 weeks of age and I could tell when she outgrew her does. She became more congested, watery eyes, and very fussy when taking the bottle. She also seemed to choke on the acid when it would come up. We have now had the dose increased and seems to be doing better.
LO hates the taste of the Zantac but seems to be used to it now. I usually give it to her with a feeding. I just give her little bits at a time (alternating between bottle and medicine).
I must say that I know how you feel. I knew that our LO had reflux when I would burp him, he would cry and grunt.....eventually spitting or throwing up! There is a difference in my opinion! As far as the congestion, my pedi says that noise that sounds like it is coming from the chest is due to reflux. The fluid settles in the lungs
We also had gassiness on Similac Sensitive. Changed to Gerber and the gas went away but we had thicken with rice with both. The gas went away but the "throwing up" did not get any better even on zantac. We are now giving Similac Alimentum.......it has done wonders! And yes a previos blogger was right when she said that the medicine will not help with spits only the burning. If your baby is not showing signs of pain when spitting up then it is possible that the meds are not necessary. That is between you and your pedi though. ps.... we also had the problem with being hungry and then turning away from bottle. Once we changed the formula....total difference. Hope that babe feels better soon. Lots of snuggles
